Virginia GOP Caught Destroying Voter Registration Forms- UPDATED
On Monday I saw a really interesting story coming out of Harrisonburg on Facebook:
"I just saw a guy throw a bag of trash in my cardboard dumpster and speed off. I went to get the bag and throw it in the trash dumpster. In the bag was a folder containing FILLED OUT VIRGINIA VOTER REGISTRATION FORMS!! I called the Harrisonburg Registrars office and they sent the police who said they really didn't know what to do in a case like this because its never happened before. The police took the forms and left. I'm really concerned because today is the last day in Virginia to register to vote and if these forms are tied up while trying to figure out what to do, will these people be allowed to vote??? I'm tagging you Lowell since I thought you might want to follow up on this. I spoke with Debbie at the Harrisonburg office and police spoke with Doug at the Rockingham county registrars office"
Who would drive up to a dumpster on the registration deadline day to throw away completed voter registration forms and why?
The car that drove up was a black Toyota Camry with Pennsylvania license plates. Who would be in the Valley from Pennsylvania and have a bunch of completed voter registration forms that they wanted to destroy?
Once this story hit Facebook, a number of people pointed out to the person who witnessed this crime that the state GOP "Victory Office" was just a couple blocks away. Yesterday afternoon, guess what car was parked in front of the office?
Yep, a black Toyota Camry from Pennsylvania.

(1,412 posts)Same thing happening in other battleground states.. GOP voter fraud is rampant!
Cummings, ranking member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, took the lead in the probe even as scandal engulfed the Republican Party of Florida, caught red-handed in voter registration fraud by its hired agent, Strategic Allied Consulting (SAC). The Florida GOP hastily terminated its contract with SAC.
The Republicans hired SAC to register voters not only in Florida but also in other battleground states including Nevada, North Carolina, Colorado, and Virginia. The SAC scandal recalls the stealing of the 2000 election in Florida when the Republican-right-dominated U.S. Supreme Court halted the vote count and handed the White House to George W. Bush even though he had lost the popular vote to Democrat Al Gore.
The chairman of the House Oversight Committee is Rep. Darrell E. Issa, R-Calif., a loud-mouth GOP hatchetman ever ready to attack organized labor and any other progressive organization that seeks to defend working people. Yet Issa has remained silent on this strong evidence of Republican voter fraud.

(20,776 posts)and I don't recall where it was, but witnesses said that someone was there throwing away bags upon bags of ballots into a land fill.
I don't recall if anyone went to prison over it, but I sure hope that, Republicans who do this, get the full extent of the law down on their necks.

(4,847 posts)disenfranchising voters, election fraud, voter intimidation; you'd think this could happen in one of those banana republics. you know, those countries that we help elect their corporate stooge, or if the people elect the leader that benefits them, then it was cheating, they are communists. and any neocon who talks about spreading democracy, I just got to laugh, more like spreading bullshite.
because these cretins don't want a democracy, they want a corporate plutocracy where they get what they want at the expense of the people and country-as long as they make profit. they'll do anything, I mean anything to win. and if it's not stopped, how morally bankrupt and corrupt can we go?

(674 posts)I think it was in Florida.
There is also the story of the Florida State Trooper who was delivering the ballots from three counties. He was several hours late and no one could reach him on a cell phone or the dispatch radio. It held up the election results and I believe it was a factor in the weird reversal of the call for Gore's victory. There was no follow up on that story that I remember. There was also the paper sack filled with Democratic voter's ballots behind a filing cabinet in one of the polling places.
The saddest part of these events is that those votes never get counted. You can send a guy to prison but in the meantime they've managed to send the wrong guy to Washington.

(15,262 posts)Sprouling, new verb
The transitive verb "to sproul" refers to obtaining and then destroying the voter registrations of political opponents. The neologism is also used as a general term for any illegal action to suppress opposition voter registration.
Conservative operatives sketchy past
This isn't the first time Nathan Sproul's efforts have come under scrutiny.
By Jillian Rayfield - http://www.salon.com/2012/10/01/a_history_of_the_gops_favorite_voter_registration_professional/
Brad Friedman from Brad Blog has been reporting, Sproul and his firms have been consistently hired as consultants to Republicans despite their legal and ethical troubles. Heres a brief history:
June 2004: Lincoln Strategies, a group headed by Nathan Sproul, attempted to siphon votes away from John Kerry by pushing to get Ralph Nader on the ballot, while also under the employ of the national Republican Party.
October 2004: In Nevada and Oregon, former employees of the group Voters Outreach of America allege that they saw the companys staff members shredding registration forms from Democrats. VOA, another Sproul-run group, was paid $500,000 by the Republican National Committee for voter outreach. In Nevada, one former employee said in a lawsuit that he was told to ask prospective voters, Who would you vote for in the next election? and then to only register those who said they would vote for Bush. The employee added that he believes his pay was also docked because he registered members of both parties. In Minnesota in the same year, VOA was accused of firing employees who brought back Democratic voter registration forms. Other employees in West Virginia and Pennsylvania made similar allegations.
October 2008: Despite the earlier concerns, Sam Stein of the Huffington Post reported that a joint committee of the McCain-Palin campaign, the RNC and the the California Republican Party, made a $175,000 payment to the group Lincoln Strategy in June for purposes of registering voters. In addition, Stein reported, the RNC paid Sprouls firm $37,000 that election cycle. ................

This has been going on for some time. Not only votes and registrations tossed, but how about the rush to non verifiable computer/voting machine voting....machines run my republican controlled companies. Most democrats couldn't check off on this soon enough. They may as well have worn a kick me sign on their back. Since then what do you know, all kind of startling upset wins by republicans.
Now one of the lead republicans on the House Science committees thinks "The Flintstones" was reality. The fact the people actually vote people like him in amazes me.

(2,434 posts)than these eastern states that generally put us down. (No comments about gun violence please!!) Anyhoo, when we registered voters as a campaign, we were given a certain amount of forms and they were numbered. If we did not return all the forms, they would not count any of the forms. What am I missing here? It says he is presently working for the RNC. That seems like a much bigger story to me than a local guy tossing votes. That sounds like the RNC's "Grassroots Field Directory" tossing votes. Help me out here. What am I missing or how am I misinterpreting this?

(431 posts)And am still reeling from what this means. I predict it tracks ALL the way back to KKKarl rove. It is very likely that this twerp will not roll over and tell who was directing him. He will be well taken care of by KKKarl rove. Hopefully, he'll end up getting a long sentence, and get some "prison love and prison justice." Still, we know how these things go. They stay out on appeal until everyone forgets about it, and then somehow slip away from the long arm of the law. Tom Delay is STILL out on appeal, and has not spent a New York Minute behind bars as yet. What galled me is that he claims to be an Eagle Scout. I am as well. We didn't learn what he did going through Scouts. I am reminded of Paul Simon's Song whenever I run into the shock of how things REALLY are with the hypocrites of the World:
And so you see I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true
I stand alone without beliefs
The only truth I know is you
--From "Kathys Song" by Paul Simon
I will stay optimistic and stop thinking that we can't stop them from stealing this election. It is all I have to hope for now. If they can't steal it, we can win it. We outnumber them....Let's hope that Holder won't let this go until after the Election...Otherwise, our struggling democratic republic faces an extremely uncertain future...

(32 posts)Where was Fox news at on this? Where was right wing nut job talk radio on this? Where in the hell was any media on this? This story should have been viral. The fact is that anytime anything happens that shows what low down, dirty, thieving, rotten scoundrels that republicans truly are it is buried. They practice shoot, shovel and shut up. The story is usually just a blip on the radar screen and then is "old news". Now if a democrat does something or if there is a slight rumor of a scandal - oh boy!! now we got some news that the media and Fox can chew on and regurgitate and chew on some more. We need to restore the fairness doctrine that Ronald Reagan did away with and we need to keep exposing these republicans for lying hypocrites that they are.
