State elections director Gary Bartlett said he believes the in-person early vote will meet or exceed 2008 totals. Bitzer predicts two-thirds of the ballots could be cast before Election Day. There are now nearly 6.6 million registered voters, 300,000 more compared to November 2008.
"There are going to be long lines at early voting sites and long lines on Election Day," he said.

(3,491 posts)in my part of NC, voting on election day was a breeze compared to previous elections. We had 40% of votes cast in the early phase and by 9am on election day, most polling places had easily managed trickles of voters throughout the day.

(2,825 posts)They wanted to know which presidential candidate I was voting for, my gender, and my age. That was it.
I wonder if they are deciding whether or not to keep putting money into North Carolina political ads? I still see Obama ads, but Romney's ads and the ads against our Democratic candidate for Governor have escalated to a nauseating degree.

(22,670 posts)I hate lines. Off peak hours here means absolutely deserted polls. I'm casting my ballot late the second day of early voting.
In and out. Whoot!

(9,609 posts)I don't think it would discourage us now. Even without early voting, the lines would be long. It's Election Day. People know how to take time out of day to stand in line for something as important as voting. Trust me, here in North Carolina we are FIRED UP AND READY TO GO!!!

(5,364 posts)Took me a few ticks longer than 2 hours and 45 minutes. They let in large blocks of shuttled in elderly or disabled people to the front of the line, which more or less rendered the line static for periods of 20 to 30 minutes. We all passed the time by talking and it was funny to hear no political talk at all from everybody within earshot. Other people there said the wait earlier was 4 hours. Biggest turnout I've ever seen but some on the back of the line I spoke with as I exited seemed discouraged and ready to give up when told of the amount of waiting ahead of them that they had.
It was brutal but it was worth it. I have a feeling NC is going to go blue ( again )

(5,364 posts)I almost felt bad, but nobody was in any way impolite. I played a "game" of sorts by trying to figure out how people would vote as they drove and walked in and out based on their appearance and vehicle they drove. Lots and lots of more elderly people but a whole lot of younger ones too. I saw no age demographic that dominated. Strange for a weekday.

(5,342 posts)They reported wait times twice as long as early voting in '08. I really don't believe that Romney is up by 6 in NC.

(2 posts)Voted at 11am after a 20-30 minute wait and was vote #117. This was in the rural part of the county, not the Goldsboro location. Mostly Republicans but a few Democrats scattered in. The Dems we're not vocal at all because of the heavy Republican atmosphere. I even heard multiple poll workers complaining about not having voter ID laws.
I also rode by the Goldsboro location at 10:30 and 4:00 and it was PACKED both times. People we're parked up and down the street because there were no parking spaces. It was a heavily Democratic crowd from what I could tell (Keep in mind that Goldsboro is 60% African-American).
Even with Goldsboro, the county will more than likely to stay red. My hope is to keep it close so that the major metro areas of the state can make up the difference.

(60,014 posts)and I would guess we were outnumbered 20-1 at least (but that didn't surprise me - typical for the State Fair).
Loved the looks we got - I had them on my shirt and hat - she had three on her shirt! We just smiled...and smiled....

(2 posts)It's too bad that I can't make it to the fair this year. I have a 9 month old who isn't really old enough to be able to enjoy anything there. Plus, I can't imagine the hassle it would be to carry a baby through that mob of people.
