Soup Kitchen In Paul Ryan Photo-Op Faces Donor Backlash
Ryan may have suffered a few late-night jokes, but the fallout for the soup kitchen appears to be far more bruising. Brian J. Antal, president of the Mahoning County St. Vincent De Paul Society, confirmed that donors have begun an exodus in protest over Ryan's embarrassment. The monetary losses have been big. "It appears to be a substantial amount," Antal said. "You can rest assured there has been a substantial backlash."
Antal says he can't give an actual dollar amount. "I can't say how much [in] donations we lost," he said. "Donations are a private matter with our organization."
Antal's charity represents the kind of organization that conservative Republicans might champion. But that was before the Ryan incident went viral a few days ago. According to The Washington Post, Antal said that the moment should never have happened. He told the newspaper that the photo-op was not authorized and that the campaign had ramrodded their way inside.
Ryan supporters have now targeted Antal and his soup kitchen, Antal said, including making hundreds of angry phone calls. Some members of Antal's volunteer staff have had to endure the barrage as well, he said. "The sad part is a lot of [the callers] want to hide behind anonymity," he said, adding that if someone leaves their name and number he has tried to return their call. In addition to phone calls, people have posted a few choice words on the charity's Facebook wall, including statements like "I hope you lose your tax [sic] emempt status," Anyone who is thinking about donations to you should think twice" and "Shame on you Brian Antal!"

Compassionate Conservatives my ass.
To make a donation to the Mahoning County St. Vincent De Paul Society, money can be sent to P.O. Box 224, Youngstown, Ohio 44501.

(1,237 posts)The owner pointed out how the Romney campaign wasn't invited. I guess their mentality is "either you're with us, or against us" also I'm sure in their twisted logic the owner is responsible for Ryan getting caught washing clean dishes.

(32,084 posts)It would still be her favorite charity if she had all her facilities about her, and she would be just as sad and appalled as I am to see what is going on here. It's the only religious-based charity I would consider giving a donation. They are a good organization, and I wish I could afford to send them a few bucks. A pox on the assholes who are cutting them off and harassing the guy who operates this soup kitchen.
PD Turk
(1,289 posts)So Ryan barges in unannounced to stage a photo op, can't be bothered to actually stay around for an hour or two and make himself useful, gets caught making an ass out of himself and it's all the fault of the charity somehow. Gawd I hate, hate, hate these damn people!!

(1,289 posts)She has been helping a local soup kitchen here for almost 30 years and she is LIVID about this. To paraphrase what she said:
" People like me and everyone else who volunteers to help feed the hungry in this country have been trying to alleviate the effects of decades of economic violence wrought by people like Paul Ryan ....people with that twisted way of thinking about poor people and their plight. Sometimes I wonder why we keep trying, but, we do, people are counting on us....they have nobody else "
(I'll exclude her string of expletives and move on to her next paraphrase)
"So this *lipless wonder* stops in to use the place for his personal political gain, takes a shit on it, gets caught and then expects the Christian man that runs the place to automatically jump up and tell a lie in his defense. I'd say it was unbelievable but nothing these assholes do shocks me anymore.....nothing."
We don't have a lot of money but she told me she has a little "mad money" she was saving up to buy a new sweater or something and asked me to look up the address to send a donation to.
God bless her that's why I love her

(1,289 posts)It certainly wasn't word for word but I got the broad strokes of what she was saying in there. Feeding the hungry is the cause in life that is very near and dear to her and when she read about the mess that Lyin Ryan made she just lost it.
