So, encouring schoolkids to have lunch with different kids encourages homosexuality

I saw this segment somewhere and I was just like

There's this new idea for schools called 'Mix it Up Day' and on that day at lunch time kids are suppose to sit with someone different at lunch instead of the same friends they might sit with everyday. It's a group associated with the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) which is to encourage tolerance amongst school kids and I think that's kinda a neat idea and a good learning lesson. And who knows - maybe new friends might be made out of it. It's suppose to be an anti-bullying promotion - when kids get to know each other better they tend to bully that person less.

So you'd think a great idea like this would be welcomed at schools that are trying to tackle things like Bullying but instead some Conservative Xtian Fundie group is screaming that an idea like this will promote homosexuality in our schools.

Anti-Bullying Campaign Called Gay Indoctrination By Conservative Group

A national campaign encouraging kids to befriend other kids who are different from them has come under fire from a conservative family group, which claims a pro-gay agenda is being foisted upon American children.

The American Family Association has taken issue with the annual "Mix It Up" Day organized by Teaching Tolerance, the anti-bullying project of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Maureen Costello, director of Teaching Tolerance, said the group started the national campaign 11 years ago, organizing it so that schools can participate on their own terms by encouraging students to sit with those they don't normally hang out with during lunch.

"Hey, the cafeteria is in fact where kids tend to self-segregate," she said. "We're trying to get them past the idea that you have to distrust people in another group. So we started Mix It Up Day. For one day, kids will be assigned to randomly sit with other people who they wouldn't normally sit with."

<<<<snip>>>>

"The Southern Poverty Law Center is using this project to bully-push its gay agenda, and at the same time intimidate and silence students who have a Biblical view of homosexuality," the AFA wrote on its website on Oct. 1.

The group called for parents to keep their children home from school on Oct. 30, the national day when schools can implement Mix It Up activities. They also prompted their supporters to write letters and place phone calls to participating schools encouraging them to pull the plug on Mix It Up Day plans.

OMG Really??!!

God forbid if I sit with the jocks at school instead of the nerds somehow I would be so inspired to change my sexual preference?

Who thinks up of this shit.

What the AFA is saying 'We're racist white people who prefer that our children not sit with non-whites and other undesirables'

so long as the kids have a good attitude about it and don't sit silently and eat those days.

Edited to add that I agree with your translation of their disagreement.

Plus it gives them a cover to talk to kids they normally don't talk to. Let's be honest we know how important image is to kids. Once they voluntarily mix some great friendships may develop if adults keep away. Kids are much more open to change than adults when left alone.
