Frank Luntz urged Republicans to substitute “climate change” for “global warming”

http://blog.seattlepi.com/seattlepolitics/2012/01/11/capitalism-is-verboten-gop-pollster/

“Capitalism” is verboten — GOP pollster

Use of the term “Capitalism” is not healthy to conservatives and the term should be “removed” from Republicans’ vocabulary, according to GOP pollster and master spin doctor Frank Luntz.

Luntz, who spun universal coverage into “government-run health care,” said on Fox News that right-think politicians need to start using alternative, more effective phrases at once. snip

He urged Republicans to substitute “climate change” for “global warming”, and helped get Fox News to order use of the phrase “government-run health care” during Congress’ 2010 debate over health care reform.

Don't let them define the rules of the game with changes in lexicon.

Always wondered where the "climate change", BS came from.

Now I do.

both "change" and "warming" sound too nice & cozy
"destabilization" at least conveys the sense that everything is NOT going to be fine

I'll try to be consistent about saying "Destabilizing climate change" which is a huge improvement as far as getting the message out in as few words as possible. Like a simple soundbite it gets the idea across.

thanks!

People like you are the reason I come to DU. Sounds poetic don't you think?

Remember, the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change was founded in 1988, when Luntz was 26. Do you think he already had control of the United Nations committees then?

James Hansen published a paper "Global mean sea level: Indicator of climate change?" back in 1983: http://pubs.giss.nasa.gov/abs/ha07210t.html

'Climate change' has been used by the scientists for decades; and since it covers the effects beyond simple warming (change in rainfall, hurricane frequency, etc.), it's a useful phrase.

So I am not sure why you would become defensive about it and start posting links?

This was a political decision to avoid using warming rather than change, that had been ran through focus groups to see what works best for Republican politicians.

Just like he is telling them not to use capitalism now because it doesn't help the GOP to do so.

Can you understand this difference?

"Always wondered where the "climate change", BS came from. Now I do. " after your personal revelation that Luntz recommended its use. You gave no indication whatsoever that 'climate change' was an established scientific phrase. You, instead, called it 'BS'. 'Climate change' is not a 'BS' phrase. Hansen is still using it.

I post links because it's worth backing up what I say. If you attack scientific terminology as 'BS', then someone needs to defend it from your mischaracterisation.

rather than leaving it look like a bit of anti-scientific, anti-intellectual ignorance, as it currently does. Your fear of links is laughable.

The 'difference' between what two things, for instance? Just explaining that would help at least part of your point to come across.
