What Mitt and his ilk don't realize is that when you force young people into a position that they don't want to be in they tend to rebel. The army, for one, is downsizing it's numbers right now to the smallest army since pre WW2. This is being done to weed out the unfit: not just physically, but mentally and behavior wise as well.

I was talking to one of my NCOs, and we both came across the subject of toxic leadership. During the post 9/11 surge in military numbers, there were a lot of recruits who later became "career chasers". Since the numbers were needed, several undeserving E4 and E5s got promotions just to fill positions. No board. No WLC. And disregard for past actions, including field grade article 15s. This later developed a toxic system and led to a horribly demoralized army. Several of these leaders that young soldiers looked up too for guidance and motivation became selfish and even tyranical. Complaints were often overlooked by senior NCOs because they were constantly busy with other matters. Suicide rates went up. Morale went down. But recruitment kept coming because we needed the numbers.

If it happens again, with a draft, it will be even worse. During Vietnam even criminals and the mentally unstable were allowed in just to fill the slots.

It's called an "economic draft." If someone goes without a job long enough, they have no choice but to "volunteer" for military service.
