What constitues a Mass Shooting?

4 people dead after a shooting in a Hair Salon earlier this week? I never saw anything about it on the national news, but I am curious as to why/what makes it into the national media cycle and what does not...Why does one grab national attention, and the other does not?

Here's the story, if anyone is interested..

A man shot dead three women inside a hair salon, including one who was five months pregnant, before turning the gun on himself on Thursday, police said.

Investigators say the gunman, 36-year-old Bradford Baumet, opened fire at 11am in the Casselton Corners plaza shopping mall in Casselberry, Florida.

Seminole County Fire Rescue officials report three people died and one was injured inside Las Dominicanas M & M Hair Salon.

Baumet’s ex-girlfriend Marcia Santiago, 44, who managed the salon was shot five times, according to her ex-husband, William Ayala, who spoke to her sister.

Ayala said he had a daughter with Santiago and the girl lived with him.

It doesn't make any sense at all, but there does seem to be a ranking of some kind - whether it is body count or location or age/race/socio-economic status or something else.

Location and socio-economic status appear to make a big difference. Sort of a 3/5ths clause for determining the worth of a life.

Location, location, location...

Will use my local nooz area.

We have a mass shooting, MCI declared, general trauma alert declared in the shooting gallery (err South East San Diego) at least once every three month, sometimes more often. Are they covered? You kid me right? And you could not pay a news crew enough to get in there after dark... serious. I know I would be looking for Kevlar...

Now if the same trauma alert, mass shooting et al happens at oh La Jolla... it will be OFF TO THE RACES for local media, and due to where our mythical shooting happened, you will have it on CNN within minutes.

Mass Murder

It would be natural to assume that "mass shooting" follows similar guidelines, especially because any of those shot could potentially die from their wounds.
