(11,087 posts)It's only been 52 years. C'mon, maybe 53 is the charm. Then we can finally get Batista back into power.

So often it seems that the more bipartisan something is, the stupider it is.

(2,457 posts)I don't even know why this is even an issue, other than the fact that a tiny number of aging Cuban immigrants can put U.S. foreign policy in a full-Nelson. I have often said that holding the embargo up for this long makes the U.S. look childish and stupid. We've given aid and trade to leaders worse than Castro.

(45,851 posts)The US is afraid that if the embargo is lifted the Cuban people will flourish under "communism", sets a bad example for their own prole...err...citizens.

(12,233 posts)The USSR is all over. And our biggest offshoring country we trade freely with is China (a really BIG country that is "communistic" . So, yes, the embargo should be lifted. All Americans should be able to travel and trade with Cuba... And the faster we open them up to "commercialization" and American tourists, the faster they become a more democratic ruled nation.
The pissing contest should be over with, in my opinion. Shoot, most people 40 and younger don't really understand why we can't go on a trip that is literally a cute little day trip out of Miami and dance to fun music and drink Mojitos.
And really, the Cuban's could really use some newer car models and we could sell the American items easily enough; instead of the Chinese setting up oil trades for new refrigerators and electronic equipment.
I honestly don't think there is any young person who understands the Cuban issue unless they are Cuban and have family in Cuba. I barely get the whole issue. It was back in JFK times, Cuban missile fears, and Castro taking over all "corporate" enterprises for "state". And I know I should know more about the history, but I don't and I don't understand how a tiny island near FL is a bigger threat than China and its billion plus population and its rise in becoming the new Imperial Super Power of the world and in a country that controls its people with an iron fist (non-democratically).
To most people who are younger, it doesn't really make any logical sense. And it would be one cool ass country that would be on my "must visit" lists if tourism opened up for all Americans and not just very wealthy side-stepping National laws, journalists, Cuban-Americans, and politicians on "fact finding missions". It's a forbidden fruit with history and culture and many, many unique site seeing intrigues. To see where the Rat Pack played and Marylin Monroe vacationed. It would just be a neat-o experience to have.
And, of course, some tourist cash infusion from Americans would help the country improve in certain qualities of life. So, I would love to see the ban lifted and to be allowed the opportunity to visit legally.

(22,144 posts)It would mean the re entry into the US market Cuban cigars. Think of the children and do nothing that would encourage any more smoking or trafficking in tobacco products.

(62,277 posts)However, given that 1000+ more dissidents have been arrested in 2012 as opposed to 2011, I don't see the US doing it. We're waiting for the regime to crumble and the privatization and travel changes are indicators that it is changing.
