She did that as she paved the way for so many women. She continues to be at the forefront of women's issues. She is owed so much by so many it is impossible to quantify the debt we all owe her.
She was on Matthews' MSNBC slobberfest tonight. The oafish Matthews closed his interview with her by saying "You're older than me and you look terrific." Good gawd that man is such a boor.

(13,071 posts)I will never forget the time she was on a talk show (Donahue I believe) and an audience member asked her if she was a lesbian (because in those days if you were a feminist you were a radical-man-hating-lesbian).
Her response: "That depends, are you the alternative?"

(109 posts)Early in the segment he mentioned something that both he and Steinem would remember because they both "were about the same age." Steinem later deflected that compliment by saying "I think I'm older than you." To which Matthews replied, "IF you are older than me you look terrific." Plus, he prefaced that remark by saying it might be a wee bit sexist; and he repeatedly told her throughout the segment what an honor it was to meet her. He was graceful and gallant.
