I don't know if it applies to every dormitory, but I just learned that the kids have to pay $30.00 a semester to get a post office box that receives mail for the USPS. The only service that comes "free" is UPS, Fedex and a third option I never heard of.
What's behind this policy?
It's a shame because USPS has a great rate for a medium size box. You can stuff it without worrying about paying for the weight. It's under ten dollars! Great for a care package.
Does UPS or FEDex offer anything like that?

(10,942 posts)My US Postal Service deliveries were free when I was in college. Being Alabama, the powers that be may want the USPS to go away, then commercial deliveries won't be free.

(46,758 posts)It's damn expensive to send care packages to kids! Why do they want to create more hardship on their own people!
These people are abusive to their own people. Their own children!

It's a private mail delivery service, just like the boxes you can rent at local shipping retail outlets. You can likely get a real P.O. box for less at the local post office, and of course you can always ship there general delivery if you want free delivery, but the kids will have to go to the PO to pick up their mail. We don't have mail delivery in my town, so everyone picks their mail up at the PO. It's not a problem, you get used to it. Of course, with no delivery service we get FREE PO boxes, but your kids will likely have to pay because most towns back east offer mail delivery.

(46,758 posts)That just doesn't sound right.
So, for a two to five pound box, which service is cheaper? UPS or Fedex?

(7,290 posts)And it's the same thing, $30/semester for a mail box. The fee isn't so much for the mail box, it's to pay for the work that the university employees have to do to sort and deliver the mail to the boxes. Plus, for packages that are too big for the box, they maintain a pick up desk.
It's roughly $3/month - just not a big deal.

(46,758 posts)It just seems unlikely that I'm going to get a better deal to pack my brick heavy brownies for less that ten bucks.
