John Franklin Stephens explained so clearly why using the R word as an insult is hurftul - in almost the exact way which many of us have been using to explain why implying Ann Coulter is transgender is hurtful:

Stephen's letter should be linked to every DU alert on the use of the R word, or XXX-tard (and to every alert on using LGBT individuals as an insult). I have rarely heard such a clear and concise explanation.
