http://www.tmz.com/2012/10/24/mitt-romney-tom-stemberg-staples-lied-perjury-divorce-case-maureen/Mitt Romney LIED under oath when he testified in the divorce of his good friend and screwed the friend's wife out of a lot of money in the process ... so claims the ex-wife of Staples' founder Tom Stemberg.
Multiple sources connected with the divorce tell TMZ ... during Tom's uber nasty divorce case with ex-wife Maureen, Mitt Romney gave a deposition and testified during the trial that Staples was worth virtually nothing. Romney testified that the company was worth very little and Tom was a dreamer and "the dream continues."
Romney characterized the Staples stock as "overvalued," adding, "I didn't place a great deal of credibility in the forecast of the company's future."
Partly as a result of Romney's testimony, Maureen got relatively little in the divorce, but we're told just weeks after the divorce ended, Romney and Tom went to Goldman Sachs and cashed in THEIR stock for a fortune. Short story -- Romney allegedly lied to help his friend and screw the friend's wife over.

(28,498 posts)I do have a question. If I'm a Mormon and sitting in court and hear another Mormon lie, then is it okay because I know he's lying and he knows I know he's lying, so that makes it all right?
To tell the truth, this campaign has been quite confusing with Mormonism in general and "Lying for the Lord," and "Legitimate Rape," and "Cutting taxes creates jobs and reduces the deficit," and "Social Security is an entitlement," and "As a Corporatist, I shipped American jobs overseas but as President I'll bring them back," and so on...

(89 posts)Let's face it. Romney's only in this because he's convinced older white males he's their guy. That's his only large demo advantage over Obama. Since 50% of those types probably lost money to women in divorces (50% divorce rate) at some point in time this story seems more likely to showcase his loyalty to his friend than anything else. Single women aren't voting for Romney anyway so I'm not sure who this news really helps Obama much unfortunately.

(426 posts)Yes, men who always think the wives get some of "their" stuff and money in a divorce could think it's great that Romney helped a friend screw over the wife in a divorce. However, women do usually end up worse off financially after a divorce (especially in "traditional" marriages where the wife either stays home or makes much less money than the husband), and I think every woman knows a friend who has suffered financially as a result of a divorce. Therefore, any attaboy votes by jerk men will be offset by women's votes lost by Romney.
On edit: I think in most states, the property acquired during a marriage is considered to be joint marital property that is owned equally by both parties, no matter who was the main breadwinner.

That is very, very, very true.
A woman who stays at home and does not work is taking a big risk because once you are over 40 or 50, it is very hard to re-enter the workforce.
That differential between the pay of men and the pay of women is due to a great extent to the low wages of women who stayed at home with their children and then tried to re-enter the workforce.
Get a part-time job at the very least. Every woman needs to think about building her work history. That is your insurance policy for the future.
TheOther95Percent
(1,035 posts)I belong to a divorce support group for women in their 50s. It's very hard to re-enter the workforce and make a decent living after being a homemaker for 20 years. It took one of my friends three years to find a job that paid the bills. Her ex-husband has been a real dick and not complied with several court orders to make payments so she's had to rely on friends and family for necessities. It's a very sad state of affairs but not an uncommon one.

(13,418 posts)with politics. I remember in 2nd grade, Judy (my best friend) and I would have fights over who was going to be Prez. Her family was repugnant.
I probably just liked the way JFK carried himself and I liked Jackie and the 2 kids. Nixon looked like the devil....and so did his wife. I wanted to stay up and wait until they declared a 'winner' on Election Eve, but it got so late I fell asleep. I remember running down the hall the next morning yelling, 'Did he win? Did he win?' That was probably the only time in my life that I was so very excited over a presidential win. I had always wanted my own 'FDR.' But that's just not going to happen.
I even got a degree in politics as a 2nd major. Watergate was so much fun to me...I was in college at the time. Bringing Nixon down was a huge triumph at the time. I thought we had conquered the enemy and everyone had learned their lessons. Now he appears to be a Teddy Bear compared to some of the vile slime we have encountered.
1980 started the decline. Raygun and Papa Bush (Thankfully I was living in San Fran which kept me safe in that little Progressive Bubble out there). Then Clinton, who I call the best Republican President EVER....well, no maybe Teddy Roosevelt. Hell, bring back Ike's tax rates of 90% on the Rich.
W nearly killed me. The 2nd term, I gained 30 lbs....that's my addiction...Food. Good thing I don't like heroin. LOL. I had worked so hard on the Kerry campaign. I was crushed. I just couldn't believe it. And it was my home state of OH that was stolen. I even drove to DC to stop the Electoral Votes of OH from being accepted. Then in '06, I worked to get the House and Senate so we could IMPEACH this war monger...but Pelosi and her damn table betrayed me. So I wasn't much in the mood for Obama. I really liked HRC. I don't get my FDR nor my first woman Prez....Who knew that my life peaked at such a young age...after I saw The Beatles for the 2nd time.
Obama didn't excite me at all...he just seemed naive. And I didn't buy into that 'Yes, We Can.' I'm too old for that. But it was a great marketing effort. And there were many times in the past 4 years that I wanted to slap him.
I still don't like him that much. It's a Campaign of Hate, imho. My dislike of RobMe is much stronger than my respect for Obama. And it's the same on the other side. Those RWers don't want a Mormon in the WH, but they hate Obama...lots of racists out there.
To be honest, I've come to the conclusion that there isn't much difference between the parties. And this campaigning is BIG CIRCUS TIME when people get all aroused w/ 'the race.' These presidents do as they are told, IMHO. TPTB call the shots on the banks, the MSM, industrial migration, everything.
I'm such a cynic...the only way out I see is for Mother Nature to hit The Reset Button....and wipe out a big chunk of the world. She's done it before and she'll do it again. Every 26,000 years, she turns on her axis. Maybe she'll shrug her shoulders and all the greedy sons of shorts dicks will go flying into thin air or drown under a massive tsunami.

(13,141 posts)I do like Obama, seriously.
I never really expected much from him, but generally
don't expect much from politicians and often wonder
why they get paid.
But I'm rather mythically inclined, and see grand things
playing out in these times. For me it is about the wind and
the sun versus the oil gas and coal. The dark powers versus
the light and life-giving powers.
Many liars and hypocrites who deal in cheat and deceit
become extremely religious. This is because they've
sold their souls to the great god Fear. Greed, Deceit,
these are minions of Fear. Extreme religion is a means
of coping with the dark terrors which inevitably come to
such people.
But on the other hand there is something in the heart
of humanity pushing to be born. It is an urge for life,
for beauty, goodness. It is hope itself, and it's powerful.
The dark things have had their time, and wreaked havoc.
They are going down. I am up with hope and change.
Hope is what keeps me going in life. It is innate in my
heart. Change will happen no matter what.
I do not want people in power who will continue to poison
the planet, or start more wars.
I see integrity and honesty in Obama, I see a man who
strives to walk his talk, who does not trade in cheat and
deceit.
I believe he is a man who lives a self-examined life, as
Socrates urged. I see him focused on doing the
best he possibly can for the country and for all of us.
This is my point of view, how I see him. To me
Obama is a good sign of evolution & shifting times.
I agree with most everything else you said, don't think you
sound crazy at all.

My life is grounded by Mother Nature. Just to walk outside and admire the trees or see a squirrel collecting food for the winter puts a smile on my face. What the Oil and Coal boyz have done to her makes me ill. She will have the final say.
I guess I don't have much faith in most people...especially politicians. Yet, I'm a political junkie. I have to know what they're doing so I can be prepared...for what, I'm not really sure. I just have this need to know and then analyze.
Your words have given me some hope. I hope you're right about those who've created havoc...they're going down!!!

What does not add up is that she surely knew she was cheated as soon as the stock went public - and the article implies it was months later. Why didn't she reopen the proceedings then? The timing will not look good. Something does not add up. I hope Democrats stay far away from this. If it has life on its own - and if true, Romney is a creep, but we already know this.

In addition, a lot of women really just want to stay married and don't really want the divorce. They don't have the clarity of thought to fight for what they will need. They fall back into unrealistic ideas about being good girls. It's a very sad social reality. Women usually get the bad end of a divorce in my opinion.
That is not always true, but often enough the wife has to hire someone who is willing to risk not getting paid much. Some women just give up. It's really sad.

(57,936 posts)Get her to think realistically about how much money she will need in the future.
A lot of women talk themselves into the idea that everything will be all right. They have been crushed by their bad marriage, but the dreams that have shattered. You have to get off the feeling bad, emotional edge and start thinking about inflation and growth in value and how much your mother and father earn or have saved. Get someone who can advise her on her financial future. Does she have a career? Will she be able to work -- realistically?
Don't feel bad. Think clearly. Set your feelings aside. Above all, set anger aside. A lot of women are overcome by their anger and disappointment and cannot think rationally when they feel rejected. That has to be set aside. Divorce is a money matter. Take away the hate and love as much as possible. Think clearly. Think rationally.
A lot of women harbor a secret wish that things could go back and be the way they were. They can't. Maybe if you kind of explore that with your mother -- her feelings of regret, she will be better able to think as clearly as she needs to.

People seem to be looking at this as Gloria Allred's "October Surprise", but there's not really much here that really bad about Romney or new. Mitt Romney Allegedly told truth in Court To Screw Over Friend's Wife

(12,754 posts)A woman friend of mine was trying to get a divorce at the time. It wasn't an amicable divorce, but it wasn't nasty either. There were some hard feelings, but they thought they could make it go smoothly.
After months of wrangling, she and her husband finally came to an agreement on how they would divide the assets.
Then, they went to court. The judge wouldn't approve the divorce. He said that she had to get a greater share of the assets and he told them to go back and work something out.
My friend was livid. She was happy with the settlement and she just wanted out. She told the judge that in court, but the judge insisted that she get more.
So, if this woman got screwed over, then Romney lied, lied, and lied some more.

(10,942 posts)Romney is a liar. Yet they will vote for Romney. I wonder whether those people have children that are listening to them and watching their actions now. The story of Mitt Romney's life is not what he says when under pressure, but what he choses to do in private, when he has the advantage and there is no pressure. I understand and trust the choices that President Obama will make in those circumstances.

(100 posts)We can't let this happen. This so called body of flesh has no traits to ever be president of any country. He has Mormon brainwashing .His father knew brainwashing when he saw it. This is really a shock that this race is taking place. Just really a sad day in politics and the news media coverage. This bag of flesh will turn back ALL advances this country has made in the past 20 years.

(2,488 posts)Unfortunately with the old boys clubs and Republican-heavy courts that will be one long uphill battle too.
But damage to Rmoney? He'll no. It's all a part of screw-everyone-you-can American Capitalism; especially if he's your (male, white, rich -- is there any other kind?) boy's-club buddy.
