...what the heck is Satan for?
(I know the theological answer, but most of American Heartland Christianity *as practiced* is a Manichean heresy of some sort where God and Satan compete. Few rank-and-file American "bible-believing" Christians who believe that Evolution is a lie promulgated by Satan believe that God created the lie of evolution and permited Satan to promulgate that lie, since everything is God's will and creation.)

(10,857 posts)Just look at what the names of tribes around the world mean, and you'll find that a great many of them name themselves things like, "The Real People," "The Chosen Ones," "The Human Beings."
The implication being that everyone not of that tribe is not "people," and sometimes not even human. The Bible is all about defining "people" differently from the way we define people today. Those who aren't "people" have no rights, can be dealt with treacherously, and are unworthy of mention in the canon except as opponents and loot.
Sometimes that definition is further refined. Look for an un-scrubbed translation of Numbers 31 and you will find something like this: "and of human beings -- of the women who have not known the lying of a male -- all the persons are two and thirty thousand."

(13,326 posts)because even Satan is God's creation, therefore God has complete control over him. This is why the rape=God's will sits squarely with evangelical beliefs.

(10,960 posts)but God does not change what he knows Satan will do...
So God lacks free will.
But we pray to him in hopes he will change his mind... which he won't, to a degree so monstrous in practice it suggests that he cannot..
But Satan can, because he has free will. So it only makes sense to pray to Satan.

God can control Satan but chooses not too because he prefers that mankind make the right choice on their own.

(23,973 posts)Seems that God does NOT love all of us, for if he did, he would not allow that to happen.
Either that, or God is just another cruel deity, like all the other sky deities, since he allows us to be created with the foreknowledge that some will be condemned to horrific punishment even before they are conceived.
Some all-loving god, there.

(5,815 posts)because they have an answer for everything. The convenient thing for them is that none of their answers have to make sense and do not have to have any logic. If you present inconsistencies from the Bible, they close their ears ( the ear lobes fold up into the ear canal) and they refuse to listen to you. Or they have a canned answer that they got from the "authority" at their church. I know that is how this works because my daughter in law used that tactic once on me. Then I got wise and realized it was a lost cause. And yes, she did tell me that she got her information from "authorities". Scary.

I've read that some Jews who survived the death camps asked that question and concluded that either God is not good or there is no God, and they gave up on religion altogether.

(26,404 posts)Satan made the person rape you; God took the opportunity to "gift" you with a baby. Nevermind of course that you will now be reminded of Satan's work for the rest of your life and nevermind that the laws would allow the rapist to maintain full contact with you and your child and nevermind that this could be some figure (family member, etc.) whose presence would threaten you and your child as well.
Job should have been so lucky.

(9,186 posts)hijack God, claim to be the official spokespersons for God and then do and say such UnGodly things:
Women who are legitimately raped can't get pregnant.
Some women rape so easily?
If you have been raped, and become pregnant, IT IS A GIFT FROM GOD?????
What do these socially, mentally, ethically, physically, psychologically retarded Republicans actually think rape is: a scene out of a porn flick with the "cool" music, the woman saying;" no, no" then yelling "YES, YES?"
Do they think a woman can't be raped?
Wow, the hatred, the misogyny is stunning. And there are still women Republicans, I just don't get it.

(96 posts)check out this quote from a Facebook post on a local TV station's report of Rmoney pulling his endorsement of Mourdock.
"we do not make the baby, God does. Once again, we as humans feel that we are the creator of man, we are not. Even during an act such as rape, God makes a decision whether the sperm enters the egg, we do not. If a baby is conceived during a rape the pregnancy is the will of God, not the rape."
Oh my goodness....I hope the stupid isn't contagious. But if it is, I can use Obamacare for my pre-existing condition.

(5,762 posts)I really enjoy your theological conundrums.
Regarding Manichean heresy, I lived in South Africa during the apartheid years. One of the interesting by-products of the ruling Afrikaner whites' vitriolic interpretation of Calvinist doctrine was a set of strict laws against blasphemy and heresy. Manichean heresy was one of their favorite targets.
One of the more notorious examples of their extreme promulgation of these laws was the banning of the work of Irish recording artist Chris de Burgh, for his song "Spanish Train." (Not saying that banning Chris de Burgh is de facto a bad thing, mind you..). It was considered fashionably subversive to own a copy of the album on which this song appeared.
For those who don't know, "Spanish Train" is a song depicting Jesus and Satan passing the time on a train playing cards for souls.
I offer this as a quick study in what Manichean heresy and how it is or is not applied.

Any religion that advocates that women are to be subservient to men, etc. etc., is a crock of shit. Not that I think there are any religions that aren't crocks of shit, but some are worse than others.
