And then tell him "Fuck off", call 911 and report the man for assault (even though you *did* defend yourelf), then go inside and vote, while the police is on its way and the man continues to writhe in pain on the grass next to that dog shit that someone thoughtfully left for the challenger.

In Ohio, the only people who can challenge your right to vote are election officials (and they can stop you, but I have never seen a challenge in several years of working). And at that , the worst we'd do is make you vote provisionally and sort it out with the county BOE.

Different states have different rules, but "Get this jerk out of my face or call a cop" is probably the better choice.

During the primaries (there were a few local issue on the ballot) the election officials were people who I know are hardcore tea party members from another area. They were actually my neighbors growing up though I live in town now, not in the township.

They are hyperpartisan and I could see them polling shenanigans.

edit: this was in Ohio btw

and then check, and double check, to make sure that everything is kosher with your voter registration.

My county changed both our zoning and our addresses; I had updated the addys on our voter registrations but my driver's license was still showing the old address. That is something that the True the Vote jackasses will jump on.

Check and double-check!

Then you tell everyone around that you wish to a trial by three shields and that you have swords/axes and shields in your car.

Now, if they decide to call the cops, you simply show the cops that you have no swords or shields and exclaim something along the line of 'How can anyone believe I would really want a form of trial by combat in this age?'. Hopefully this will discredit the challenger as everyone snickers about the wet spot on their pants and puddle on the floor, ensuring he won't challenge anyone else that day.

If they accept your terms, you look at the election officials and ask why they are even allowing that person to challenge anyone since they are mentally unbalanced to think that anyone would actually want a trial by combat at the voting place.

Unfortunately, I seriously doubt I'll get challenged.

and run shrieking back to their caves, when confronted with the honest truth (or an authentic County Auditor/Registrar of Voters).

I tangled with them earlier this year and they ended up apologizing profusely for their idiocy...they are nothing but reactionary running dogs who crumple when face to face with an actual long-time democratic voter!

apologizing profusely for their idiocy..."

I'd like to hear more about that...yummy.

As for the violence, I wouldn't actually act on it if it came down to it but at least they have seen it promised should one of their goons approach me. An attempt to make them think twice about the possibilities that could befall them if they attempt to challenge people's right to vote.

And shoot, it might be fun if they take me up on it. After all I'm 61 years old. If they beat me up, they've beaten up their grandfather. If I beat them up, they've been beaten up by their grandfather. It's win/win!

2. ask that person to properly identify himself (with proof)

3. have him/her state for the record which organization he represents

4. and ask by which legal precedent he/she is challenging your vote

By now that person has probably back down and slithered away, but we need to start building a full index of name-and-shame videos for investigation and possible legal proceedings...
