For anyone who has been following Obie on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BiggestLoserDoxieEdition
or elsewhere in the media, Obie is a very fat dachshund who belonged to an owner with Alzheimer's who fed the little guy way too much. Nora received the dog from an Oregon rescue group. She has helped Obie lose over 15 pounds and he's doing so much better. Now the rescue organization is suing Nora to regain custody of Obie. Please sign the petition to encourage the judge to let Obie says with Nora. http://www.change.org/petitions/jenell-rangan-stop-fighting-to-take-obie-away-from-his-home If you look through Nora's FB page, you can really see the tremendous progress Obie has made since coming to live with Nora. She feeds him a restricted but healthy diet, and he's now mobile enough that he can walk on the beach.

(5,649 posts)There was just an update on the local news here in Oregon that included the information that there is more than $10,000 in the PayPal account for Obie, and that Nora has control of it. She has been using the funds responsibly, and seeing to Obie's needs. Just a hunch here; somebody's eyeing that money?
Anyway, petition signed. Leave little (?) Obie with Nora.

(53,072 posts)For Obie's behalf and that she hasn't gotten him medical attention, which Nora says is not the case. I've been following them on FB for two months, and it is clear to me that Nora is a great dog owner and has helped Obie tremendously. My sense is that Jannell, the woman who runs the Doxie rescue group, wants money. You can read more on the latest FB entry linked above.

(19,926 posts)loss. Poor thing. He still looks like a seal when he's on the beach!

(2,682 posts)Here's a dog that needs special medical attention. One person says she is unable to provide it and gives the dog up. Another said she is able and willing to care for the little guy. The resulting improvement in the dog's health and well-being should be enough to close the case. It's the greed of the first person that is showing here. Shame!!

(53,072 posts)The original owner is not involved in the suit. The plaintiff is the head of the rescue group that placed Obie with Nora. It's obviously about money.

(2,682 posts)I was trying to avoid using names and somehow didn't make myself clear. The rescue group said they were unable to care for the dog and gave it to the person who currently has custody of the guy.

(1,542 posts)I've followed Obie's progress for several months as well via FB, and Nora is doing a great job with him. He was 77 lbs. when Nora got him, and as of her last report, I think he's down to 62 lbs.
Nora's doing a great job with Obie, and he's bonded with her and his siblings... Nora deserves our support...
It would be a real injustice if the Court rules against Nora... Jannell just wants to capitalize on all the attention that Nora and Obie have been getting, and to take control of Obie's wellness fund..., IMO..
I encourage everyone to check out the story, and sign the petition..!

(2,015 posts)It breaks my heart that they would think of uprooting this poor boy who has been through so much already.

(43,853 posts)There's a similar custody battle going on with Patrick, the dog who was found in a dumpster in Newark last year. The Associated Humane Societies are fighting with the veterinarian at the animal hospital where he was treated. As far as I can tell, most people are on the side of the vet who's been caring for Patrick. It seems that the Humane Society wants him back for the fund raising possibilities.

(53,072 posts)They bond with their owners and other pets in the house, as Obie has with Noggin and Hunter. Uprooting animals repeatedly is just cruel.
