George W Bush did a great job for conservatives...

...Unfortunately, he did a terrible job for America.

Bush and the Repubs said a balanced budget was not good for this country.
Alan Greenspan agreed with them. So they went on a spending and tax-cutting
binge. We all know the rest of the story.

But Bush was a great conservative because he created a political reality that
made it impossible for Democrats to continue supporting the social safety net
they had created over the years. Furthermore, he created a low revenue base
that made it almost impossible to raise taxes for any purpose. Even many Democrats
were supportive of the low tax cuts.

The "less government" Republicans got their life-long wish. Democrats have been forced
to adapt to the new conservative economic theology. In that respect, George W Bush
has been a great success story for the conservative movement.
