Tennessee Bathroom Bill Sponsor: ‘I Would Stomp A Mudhole’ In A Transgender Person

Much has unfolded in the day since the “Bathroom Harassment Act” was first introduced in the Tennessee legislature, a bill that would fine transgender people $50 for using bathrooms and dressing rooms.

First, state Sen. Bo Watson (R) has withdrawn his version of the bill. He had introduced it as a courtesy to state Rep. Richard Floyd (R), who represents the same region of Tennessee. In a statement to ThinkProgress, Watson’s communications director explained that “Sen. Watson concluded that there are far more pressing issues facing the state of Tennessee at this time.”

Floyd now stands alone as the sponsor of the bill (HB 2279), which he defended yesterday using incredibly transphobic rhetoric. In no uncertain terms, he explained that he would resort to violence if he ever encountered someone transgender in a dressing room:

FLOYD: I believe if I was standing at a dressing room and my wife or one of my daughters was in the dressing room and a man tried to go in there — I don’t care if he thinks he’s a woman and tries on clothes with them in there — I’d just try to stomp a mudhole in him and then stomp him dry.

Don’t ask me to adjust to their perverted way of thinking and put my family at risk. We cannot continue to let these people dominate how society acts and reacts. Now if somebody thinks he’s a woman and he’s a man and wants to try on women’s clothes, let him take them into the men’s bathroom or dressing room.

"would stomp a mud-hole" in a transgender person. The man clearly has rage issues, and is a bigot. People like him use hyperbole, like "these people dominate society," in discussing the issue. It is the same mentality that leads some Christians to claim they are being persecuted because there are laws and court precedents that keep them from forcing everyone to worship their god on their terms.

In the mind of this "man," a transgender person is nothing more than a cross-dressing pervert. He is obviously uneducated and is very likely ineducable.

That's insanity. So, what, we automatically start attacking people who aren't as feminine or as masculine as we think they should be? There are more than a few people who don't exactly "look" feminine or masculine. This dude is literally encouraging violence and murder against anyone who appears "different".

He is clearly DREAMING of committing violence AND murder HIMSELF. He seems like one of those types who turn to "Old Testament Remedies"* to satisfy his lust for vengeance and retribution in a world that fails to comply to his narrow view of how society, no, the WORLD should be.

*I wanted to add a disclaimer here. I am not saying that all who find value in the so called "Old Testament" are wrong or bad. I instead here refer to those who cherrypick the "Old Testament" to fortify their reactionary hatred of things outside the "norm" as they see it.

It's always been the best description of them, and their idol OxyRush played the Godwin card in spades (heh heh) decades ago when he called any woman who didn't want a life of barefoot-n-pregnant "feminazis".

Who monitors these things? Of course, TN approves of harassment of certain categories of folks. I guess as long as he doesn't stomp a mudhole in Jesus he's golden there.

Is he not aware that a great many times more transgender people have been murdered by rampant homophobes and transphobes like himself than the other way around?

And exactly how does he know that someone he SUSPECTS in transgender is even transgender? Oh gee, let's just advocate killing people because they aren't masculine or feminine enough to suit this idiot's perceptions. My God, I can't believe a public official would actually advocate killing his constituents - and make no mistake, that's exactly what this asshole is doing.

I was at a conference back in 2000, and a transgendered person talked about her experience in going through a male to female sex change (I've probably just broken about 37 rules in referring to transgendered persons - I don't mean any offense). Prior to surgery, she began using the women's restroom and so forth, and someone raised a stink about her going in there with a penis. She very calmly explained that because of the hormones she was taking, the therapy she was going through, and so forth that any remaining sexual apparatus was pretty much non-functional.

This person's quiet dignity and courage through what sounds like an incredibly difficult life experience impressed me highly, and made the folks harrassing her seem incredibly mean and petty. This person's antics have done nothing to change that estimation.

It takes a lot of courage to be different, period in this world. People like this raving lunatic apparently froths at the mouth at the idea of murdering or at least violently assaulting anyone that is too "different."

the reddest states in the union, represented by one of the nuttiest piss-tachioes in all of congress (Paul Broun JR, [R] GA-10), and our institutional policy is shifting to having more unisex restrooms available. It only makes sense, because in addition to Trans people you also have special needs people who have people attending them of a different gender (say, mother with a special needs son).
