Katy Perry's appearance at an Obama campaign rally this week probably put her on the radar of some who avoid modern pop. Here's her deal...
It is hard to say who the biggest musical act is these days but she's in the top few. Had 10 or 11 #1 hits from one album. A mega-celebrity. Her schitck is old-time pin-up... lots of skin but always wholesome.
Daughter of two evangelical ministers, she started out as a gospel singer. Has a well-placed Jesus tattoo.
She is probably the top selling entertainer in the world the last couple of years. I think of her as the rural Americana Lady Gaga. Her nods to edginess are very safe.
But in the context her milieu she really is pretty edgy. This is someone who can headline at the state fair or sing the national anthem at a NASCAR eventcampaigning for Obama is probably more radical in Nebraska than marrying one's gay partner is in New York. Perry surely has some Republican fans to lose.
She famously appeared on Sesame Street a while back and somebody decided her dress was too revealing for kids. No idea whether Romeny's attack on Big Bird played a role in her political evolution.
She's fairly patriotic...
(That tattoo is Sanskrit for "go with the flow"
She has more than one Obama dress.

(10,960 posts)She is what she is. 4-5 good songs. Lots of formulaic filler. I've always found her interesting in terms of mainstream American culture. Most of our all-American diva types are country artists.
But I was struck reading some threads that even though she might be the top selling artist since Micheal Jackson, in our modern self-selected media world a lot of people couldn't pick her out of a line-up. Culture is more segmented.
So I wanted to let people who block out pop culture know what a big celebrity she is, in terms of endorsement value.
