With less than two weeks until Election Day, Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill clings to a narrow two-point advantage over her challenger, U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, according to a new survey of Missouri voters.
McCaskill leads Akin 45 percent to 43 percent in the poll, conducted this week by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research on behalf of The Kansas City Star, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and KMOV-TV in St. Louis.
The same poll shows Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney with a commanding lead over President Barack Obama in the race for Missouris 10 electoral votes.
Romney leads Obama by 13 points, 54 percent to 41 percent, among Missouri voters who said they were likely to cast ballots.
McCaskills lead over Akin in the increasingly Republican Show Me State may reflect the continuing controversy surrounding his August remarks about rape and abortion. Of those polled, 53 percent said Akins statements about legitimate rape were very or somewhat important in their Senate decision, while 44 percent said they were not too important or not important at all.

(28,873 posts)I was always used to thinking of MO as a fairly good, sane state...
maybe because of Truman.
Boy has it changed!

(22,143 posts)I have no faith in the citizens of this country at all. The fact that a fucking moron like Akin can even be close in an election anywhere just shows how broken and fucked this nation is. Obama's going to win but we're still fucked.

(63,912 posts)Akin will be defeated by "the women's vote." I've seen that meme so many times and seen it go down in flames when in reality the Akin types win, that it just disgusts me. When will we learn that in many states there are enough women who don't buy into our arguments (for whatever reason) that we lose again and again.
I'm not saying it isn't worth the fight. I will always fight. But please, let's not continue to think that just because the Akins of this country say outrageous stuff about abortion and rape, that all these women will suddenly become enraged and vote accordingly. Often, they just don't do what we "think" they should do.

(251 posts)and so she has been off the campaign trail for a bit.
That said, there are a lot of racist, sexist, and firmly entrenched republicans here in MO. Mostly the rural areas. In and around Kansas City and St Louis there is a heavy concentration of more liberal and/or Democrats. I'm really hoping we get McCaskill for another term. I despise akin probably even more than the average republican. Surprisingly not because of the rape comment or his views on women. I despised him way before all that came out.

Was there a reason you needed to post this misleading poll that makes all Democrats look as if they're losing?

(8,994 posts)You could argue that saying McCaskill is winning, might inspire some people to let up and maybe not even vote because they think they have it in the bag.
In theory.

(15,438 posts)Considering how "lazy" Democratic voters can be (I'll never forget mid-term elections 2010), I can see the point.

(34,179 posts)The next time that the Post swings to the left will be its first.
Almost all of the Missouri polls have shown McCaskill with a steady 6-10 point lead since the end of August. They have also shown Obama consistently drawing closer to Romney, up to within a couple, three points of Romney.
Nobody in this state takes the Post seriously anymore, except for its sports section. An example of a once great newspaper going to the dogs.
