Gloria Allred. Not what you think.

I'd had pretty much a negative opinion of Gloria Allred until a friend suggested maybe I didn't know enough about her and referred me to this article:

http://www.elle.com/print-this/gloria-allred-the-avenger?page=all

My opinion of her has improved quite a bit. An excerpt:

THE AVENGER
You know her as the lawyer who represented Tiger Woods’ mistresses and the blond allegedly groped by presidential hopeful Herman Cain. But Gloria Allred has also done pioneering work for women’s rights. Is it possible to be a righteous feminist advocate and a celebrity gun for hire?

BY JENNIFER SZALAI

Allred was admitted to the California bar in 1975, which happened to be the year that Time, in its Person of the Year issue, dedicated to American Women. She started a law practice with two classmates from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, Michael Maroko and Nathan Goldberg, and they began to establish themselves as specialists in civil rights, including the burgeoning fields of gender discrimination and sexual harassment.

In 1980, she successfully sued the L.A. County Sheriff's Department, which had been shackling pregnant inmates while they were in labor. In 1984, Allred filed a case against L.A.'s Catholic Archdiocese on behalf of a woman who was abused by seven priests and had given birth to one of their offspring; 23 years later, she won. Another client had been asked during a job interview about her menstrual cycle; Allred won a settlement after eight years of wrangling.

Her critics point to these early victories and draw a sharp contrast with her later work, wondering why the same attorney would deign to take on plights that seem more like fodder for gossip mags than grave affronts to justice. But Allred doesn't see the discrepancy in such stark terms—if she sees it at all. In her 2007 book, Fight Back and Win, she has a chapter called "Little Things Start Big Changes" in which she describes bringing suit against everyone from a dry cleaner (for charging more to clean women's blouses) to a kids' salon (for charging more for girls' haircuts).

The sheer range of cases is striking. And to each one—whether the client was a victim of rape or a reality-TV experience gone awry—Allred appends an "Empowerment Lesson." (Sample: "Standing up for integrity has its price, but it's one worth paying.&quot Allred seems to have taken "the personal is political" rallying cry of the '70s and run with it, finding both victimization and empowerment wherever she looks.

Indeed, Allred still uses the radical vocabulary of an earlier era. "I'm not an academic. I'm not a philosopher," she told me the first time we met. "I'm in the war zone, I'm on the battlefield. Often, there's going to be blood in the water." She concedes that women are "learning their rights, and they're fighting back," but she doesn't believe things have improved much for women in the four decades since she started practicing law.

If anything, she said, young women are prone to greater disappointment, "because they expect to be treated fairly, to be treated on their merits, not sexually harassed, not beaten, not deprived of their child support. 'It's 2012? I didn't think it was going to happen to me.' They're in shock." When pressed about whether she truly believes the situation is as dire as it's ever been, Allred is unrelenting. "It hasn't gotten better in 36 years," she told me, her brown eyes trained steadily on mine. "There are still wounded on the battlefield, and most of them are called women."

It's "never a dull moment" when she's on the case, too.

When she steps out in front of a client, people back off the client. She did a great job with that girlfriend of the wife murderer Scott Peterson--she just wouldn't allow that young woman to be trashed.

She's also a role model for a vigorous career in one's later years...so what's not to like?

She trusted the Globe to motion to lift the gag order, and they stabbed her in the back. She could have filed the motion herself, but went along with their's. Although Stemberg would have probably objected and it probably would have been drawn out - far past the election, for sure.

I read the testimony. The MR campaign is correct - it's just a bunch of financial mumbo-jumbo and without having someone (Ms. Stemberg) put it in context, it means nothing.

Bet the Globe realized this too and are probably sorry they didn't pursue the gag lift. At least tried.

for her client. All we know about her client is this--the woman is gagged, and she KNEW Mittsy and Annie. She might have some tales to tell. I think there may be some "there" there...who knows?

We do know that Mittsy undervalued the stock. Of course, that's not actionable because OPINION isn't--and he was giving his supposed opinion. However, it could be said that he's a pisspoor businessman if he couldn't tell if his company was any good--it should make anyone worry about his decision-making ability to steward the future of ANY enterprise, never mind the fate of the USA!

I wouldn't trust him to make accurate predictions about the earning power of a farm stand after a great growing season!

So when I see all the guys that post nasty comments about her on DU I always silently ask myself "What have you done to re-elect the President? What have you contributed to the local/state Democratic party? What have you done to support the disenfranchised?" The answer is obvious.

She was a regular guest. She was a good sport. But over the years, she has developed a reputation for integrating herself in high profile news cases...not necessarily justifiable cases that weren't big in the news...and her first order of business is to go on TV. She is, like most successful people, ego-driven.

That may be a negative to you. I did not say it was a negative, though, did I? In fact, I said that was ok.

You didn't answer my question. She was a regular on the Morton Downey show in the 1980s. That's how she got famous. Did you see her on that show? That show was the pre-cursor to the Jerry Springer Show, some say. That was the general style of it, except it was on in the evenings.

the article I posted? If not, please do if you get a chance. I think you will see what she feels her justification is for most of her cases.

As for the publicity-seeking, well, also part of her winning strategy. We're inclined to find that unseemly, especially in a woman, but I think that's because we've been conditioned by society's misogyny and that often that technique is used for unseemly ends. I think she is using it for good.

We can't be well informed on every issue, and so we sometimes rely on the chatter. Even after all the times I found they were wrong, even having had liberal views on most things ever since I can remember, I still fall for that crap on occasion. I'm sure I'm not alone in that.

The reason she could never be confused with a Republican is because they don't fight for women...they usually fight with them, or against them!
