General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsA view from the reddest of red states - Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweeping down the plain.
I live in the only State in America that went entirely against President Obama. The President did not win a single county. I remember the environment at the time and people were openly hostile and very vocal in their opposition to candidate Obama.
Fast forward 4 years. I work in a very right leaning occupation and I am surrounded by republicans. I interact face to face with 30-70 people a day. This year I hear almost zero political talk in the workplace. Criticism of the president is done now in whispers instead of shouts and that criticism is fewer and further between than four years ago.
The people who were once shouted down and openly mocked for their political beliefs, democrats, liberals, blacks, Hispanics, gays are now able to defend themselves and openly state their opinions and do so, sometimes, vocally and forcefully and often with quickly responding backup.
I have personally spoken to two republicans in my workplace who were strong opponents of President Obama in 2008 who are leaning towards voting for him or not voting at all because of their professed and intense dislike or Mitt Romney. I have also heard one of my republican co-workers tout the benefit of Obamacare allowing her to get insurance coverage for her adult child.
There are no Romney/Ryan stickers on any cars in our parking lot. There is one Obama magnet, mine. This is representative of mass drop off in election signs for the republican ticket city and state wide. I have seen about a dozen Romney Signs in my daily 35 mile commute through country, suburban and urban neighborhoods (six of those are in one yard). I have seen a few more Obama signs but there are about equal amounts for both candidates.
There is a palpable apathy towards Romney if not downright dislike. On the democratic side, my friends, family and a surprising amount of my co-workers are fired up to vote for President Obama. I have donated more money to his re-election than I did in '08 and more than I have ever donated to any politician in my life. I proudly wear my 2008 Obama t-shirt to work every day (under another shirt as to wear it openly would be a violation of city policy) but I flash my fellow supporters and, occasionally, one of the few vocal right wingers.
One adamant republican from 2008 texted me during the Biden/Ryan debate and said, "The old man is kicking the young man's ass." She later quietly told me that she couldn't stand Mitt Romney, didn't trust him and didn't think he was for the working class. Another young man who just registered as a republican at 25 told me he didn't know if he was a republican or not but that he didn't like Romney and wanted to know my opinion of him and President Obama. I gave it to him. He agreed with the things I had to say about both candidates.
I have no doubt that Oklahomans will overwhelmingly vote for Mitt Romney but if the apathy towards him in the belt buckle of the bible belt is any indication of national sentiment, he is in big trouble nationwide. If he can't win the trust of right wing, Christian, republican Okies, Romney can't win.

I am not personally attacking Mormons. Just pointing out what most of the red state folks have been taught in their churches and by their leaders. It appears that they only have strong convictions against women and minority rights.

(37,573 posts)In 2004, it seems like I saw Kerry all over the place. Bumper stickers, yard signs. Heck, I thought we might win Kansas.
Ha, we lost this county about 16,000 to 10,000.
Now though, I see far more Romney and Nobama stickers than anything else. I don't have any expectation that Obama won't get thumped in this county, and in this Congressional district and this state.
RKP5637
(67,112 posts)6 to 1 more signs for Romney/Ryan than Obama/Biden. Many of the Obama/Biden signs get stolen by asshole republicans. Some have taken to putting their Obama/Biden signs inside their house in the windows than in the yard. After the recent primaries in Kansas, I have no doubt that Kansas will be as red as red can be in this election.
I did see some really interesting bumper stickers recently ... I'm a patriot stickers, etc. on the back of the truck, pretty much the teabagger stuff ... and then a big red sign on the side of the truck said "I'm no Republican, I'm a Democrat!!!"
hfojvt
(37,573 posts)the yard signs are taken up with state legislative races, but the Democratic candidates, other than myself, are doing a good job getting their signs out. Still, there are LOTS of Republican signs too for the local candidates. So it is hard to tell, I expect we will win in the 41st and the Sherrif looks strong. If we win Senate 5 (and we should (knock on wood)) it will be because of Wyandotte County, not my own. Same with the 3rd district, except it will be Douglas County. The other races, we are likely to lose the 42nd. Hard to tell with the 40th. It's uphill, but I am hopeful. We have a decent shot at the 38th as well, although I kinda have to shake my head. Our candidate is a retired insurance man, who makes six figures in retirement. He's a decent guy, I have known him for probably five years, but really is that the best representative of the working class? I guess anything would be better than a rubber stamp for the Governator that the Republican would be. But still ...

(8,322 posts)And I live in Houston (nearly inside the Loop), in a blue precinct. Romney yard signs out number Obama about 8-1. Nearly got run off the road this past week in my wife's car, which has an O magnet and a "Women will Remember in November" one also.
EV turnout in the nation's 2nd-largest county (Harris, Texas) is massive, however, and that's encouraging:

(51,076 posts)I've seen a couple Obama/Biden yard signs but actually not many of either party this time around. I've seen more old bush/cheney bumper stickers on cars that were passing through than I have for either party candidates this time around. I've yet to see a RR sticker on an automobile that has an Oklahoma tag on it in these parts of the woods whereas I have seen one for Obama/Biden.
This is unprecedented as in previous elections around here I'd see brazillions of yard signs and bumper stickers for both dems and pukes.
Is this a good sign or bad, I don't know but I keep hoping for the best. In this mornings Tulsa newspaper I read an article that said that in Tulsa county Obama has received more contributions than rMoney has but in the state that isn't the case.

There is a palpable dislike for Romney in the South, too. He has three problems - 1. He's a Mormon, and evangelicals don't really trust that. 2. He's established himself as a candidate that changes his position ever time he opens his mouth. 3. Romney's biggest problem - He's plain not likable. Neither is his wife. He was a terrible man and father so this is out of a sense of duty, not love. Our time in Nov. is the first two weeks, so I will be there on election night. When we were there in August, 2008 when my mother in law died, I saw McCain bumper stickers and signs everywhere. This year, I'v seen about 3 Rmoney bumper stickers and only a few signs. Even though I know the "good white Christians" will vote GOP, they aren't visible supporting the Mormon. I am dreading election night.. if Rmoney wins this I will be inconsolable. This sentiment is the thing that terrifies them. Because EVENTUALLY, it will spread and then it won't just be those people you mentioned that can defend themselves, it will be the working masses back-talking and taking to task, their economic "betters".
And that can't be allowed to happen.

(5,526 posts)I live in the reddest part of the reddest state, and trust me, they hate Obama. The curious thing about Oklahona, a state still living in the dark ages, is that we have appox, 640,000 people with no health insurance. Yet, the majority of the people in this state oppose the Affordable Healthcare Act. Most Okies also believe that Obama has cut the military, despite the fact that he has increased military spending each year that he's been in office. Another curious aspect of Oklahoma is the women. Most will vote for Romney, despite the crazy statements about rape and abortion coming from the right. Oklahoma also is home to the most rightwing newspaper in America, the daily Oklahoman. One of our Senators, a lunatic by the name of Jim Inhofe, goes around the state telling people that Obama has disarmed America. Having said all of this about the state that I call home, there are many good Democrats in this state who stand up to the wingnuts on a daily basis. (2,577 posts)I live in Ohio, and I'm actually shaken up by the LARGE number of Rmoney/Lyin signs in yards. We didn't have this number of McCain/Palin signs in my immediate neighborhood in 2008. I live in a very middle-class neighborhood in a largely blue county. I don't have an Obama sign this time, but I do have Sherrod Brown's sign. (Obama headquarters was out the times I went.)
At a few homes, the Rmoney signs line the driveway. It feels like the homeowner wants to announce loudly to all of us just how very racist he is. My neighbors aren't wealthy, nor am I. They will need Social Security and Medicare as they get older. They will need health care insurance. Their decisions make no economic sense.

(2,390 posts)No one is polling Oklahoma because of our history. I would assume it to be redder than red.

(66 posts)Oklahoma, which has a storied past as the state that nearly became socialist in the early 20th, is so RED now residents would fit right in with the Kremlin Kolor Theme.
There's no politics of any substance left here. The wingnuts have won. And we Dems have for the most part given up. There's just no reason for the Repugs to post national signs, and displaying an Obama bumper sticker or yard sign is an invitation to road rage or bricks through the window.
The only issue here is who can be the most repugnant. The Tulsa Congressional District is open because the TeaBaggers threw out John Sullivan. A terrible Congressman, and the best we could hope to have in Washington, because he wasn't just a knee jerk jerk, he wandered off to rehab often enough to miss votes.
Our likely Repug Rep? Bridenstine, a guy who "wants to cut domestic spending on programs like Social Security and Medicare in order to inflate the military to an even larger size, granting huge amounts of money to irresponsible and wasteful corporate contracts that even the Pentagon says are unnecessary and amount to little more than pork barrel."

It would be dark humor, if he weren't already packing for Washington --- with the full and ignorant support of thousands of folks on Social Security . . .

(11,607 posts)For ten years I worked for a company in OKC. Although I live in CT I use to visit your state regularly. I can attest to your post. Redder than Red. No need for Flipper to spend money in states he already has sewn up..

(81,404 posts)My sincere apologies, but when I see clips on the news of either of your senators, I find myself seriously wondering what the hell is wrong with Oklahoma voters. I mean - james inhofe? Seriously? Your state wants THIS certified Neanderthal ding-dong representing you in the Senate, who never saw a pollutant he wanted to regulate or protect the population from? tom coburn? Really???? This Christianist zealot Cro-Magnon weasel who helped run that religious house of horror in Georgetown where john ensign took aid and comfort while he was screwing his friend's wife? And Oklahoma voters are truly okay with this? WTF??? I do NOT get it.
I keep reminding myself that Oklahomans are truly wonderful and noble people and they are my countrymen and women and they love their country just as I do. For Heaven's sake, the Oklahoma license plate is one of the loveliest of them all. But SHEESH!!! When I see what they repeatedly want to send to Washington ON THEIR BEHALF, I just can't make sense of it.

(12,265 posts)I truly ask myself that question on a regular basis. What I have found is the lack of education has a lot to do with it. A great many of the people I have met here do not read anything past a comic book now and then. They let their pastors tell them how to vote and how to think.
If they do read, it is the trash rag in OKC the Oklahoman, something right of Limbaugh. They all vote straight ticket republican no matter what! Our state legislature is trying to push through a law that will get all of the oil and gas companies (as well as other large businesses) off the hook for paying taxes on most of their intellectual property (I use that term very loosely down here). It will force the cities and counties to raise taxes to pay for roads, schools all of the basics but because our Governor is selling it as a great thing they will no doubt vote for it.
I live with a bunch of dumb sheep..... There are some progressives down here like us, but we are terrified to speak out, I don't write letters to the editor or anything since we work for the university. Not a wise thing for sure....
I disagree with the original post in this thread a bit, I do see fewer Republican signs and stickers but I know they are all still out there, nut jobs everyone. Democrats down here would be a moderate Republican anywhere up north. Not really Democrats as I knew them.
Not all of us are nuts, but we are certainly in the minority and silenced for the most part. If you like your job you keep your mouth shut and listen.

(81,404 posts)I just shake my head at what goes on. I DO NOT GET how people can be so blind. My condolences to you. I guess that's one other really good reason why sites like DU are here. You can come here and speak confidently and openly and safely. You're among friends here. Glad you found your way to us! We need you!!!!! Maybe not to redeem your state at this time, but certainly to make sure we clinch this election for President Obama.
Now get to work. Below the radar, of course, but get to work!

(55 posts)My wife and her family (all progressives) are from the Tulsa area. To be honest I think all of us would be shocked to NOT see a repeat of the 2008 statewide Nobama type sweep. I saw more Obama bumper stickers in 08. I see more now. So what? Nobody was excited about McCain. Nobody is excited about Romney. Liberals, progressives, and Democrats of all walks carry a passion that is unrivaled except by the looniest of loons (wait, in Oklahoma that is pretty much everybody) on the right.
I work in a hospital where a disproportionate number of my peers are a) educated and b) women. It seems to me that only in the ICU where a good number of us are irreligious and have a knowledge of what is going on outside of the bubble does it seem that the general anti-Obama sentiment is lacking. Anywho... to think of Oklahoma as purple is wishful thinking. I imagine that this state will catch up to the rest of the country somewhere around 2075. If you rounded up all the progressives in the state and put them in one county, then maybe Obama wouldn't get swept in Oklahoma. This place is a pit of ignorance. Sure it is more acceptable to speak one's mind than it was four years ago, but the majority of people are the type of brainwashed robots you expect to find over at freerepublic.com.

(31 posts)your thoughts and work experiences on this topic. I was googling "Why is Oklahoma a Red State?" after yet another conversation with a client that left my office yesterday. So..I was led to this wonderful website and had to join. I have read through most of the responses on this topic. Even though I have lived in Oklahoma all of my life and no stranger to the (many times) nonsense attitudes that are prevalent, it still somehow baffles me how I can run into so many people whom make lower middle income salaries whom claim to be a Republican party supporter. One of several conclusions I have come to is this...many people are easily persuaded by others whom are in a position of seeming authority and want to be liked by them or be included in a group with them. I understand this from my experience in an advisement to others profession. There are many, many people that are easily misdirected and I have spent countless hours/days/weeks in helping these persons to get repaired from this misguided influence. One client told me he and his wife honestly just followed his pastor's advise about many areas of his life...financial, political, etc because he and his wife respected this person immensely and wanted to be like him, liked by him, and included in his group. They simply chose not to use their critical thinking capability to investigate if the actions they were taking were in "their" best interests. I also have quite a few of my relatives that are on government/taxpayer long-term assistance...social security disability, VA disability. I am not against these programs and agree still to this day that we need programs such as these to help those among our society whom have no other way. What I find amazing is they wouldn't put out a liberals body that is on fire if they had the fire hose. I have had calm conversations with most of them regarding this amazing lack of understanding, however, it's like I was trying to tell them that the world is round..they won't accept it. I am not by any means a political activist type of person, but if the subject comes up, I will tell them EXACTLY what I believe with a smile and continue trying to help and educate those in the state of Oklahoma so they can make better fundamental critical decisions going forward.
