Still, there are LOTS of Republican signs too for the local candidates. So it is hard to tell, I expect we will win in the 41st and the Sherrif looks strong. Our candidate is a retired insurance man, who makes six figures in retirement. He's a decent guy, I have known him for probably five years, but really is that the best representative of the working class? I've seen a couple Obama/Biden yard signs but actually not many of either party this time around. I've seen more old bush/cheney bumper stickers on cars that were passing through than I have for either party candidates this time around. I've yet to see a RR sticker on an automobile that has an Oklahoma tag on it in these parts of the woods whereas I have seen one for Obama/Biden.
This is unprecedented as in previous elections around here I'd see brazillions of yard signs and bumper stickers for both dems and pukes.
Is this a good sign or bad, I don't know but I keep hoping for the best. In this mornings Tulsa newspaper I read an article that said that in Tulsa county Obama has received more contributions than rMoney has but in the state that isn't the case.

In my neighborhood there is one Romney sign and one Obama sign.

We get called by them on our land line but neither of us has received a call from a pollster on our cell phones. Many of the younger generation don't have land lines and the ones I know are Obama supporters so my hope is that President O will win big even here in Oklahoma. I see some support for him in red Tennessee, but not nearly as visibly evident as for Bush. I don't think they are supportive of Romney. I do think they are viciously anti-Obama. My experience w one Okie friend from HS was almost violent. At the time he was a missionary in Africa. North of Oklahoma City, and I must say. I have only seen 1 yard sign in Edmond & maybe 5-7 car stickers between both city's Now in 2008 this whole City was satuate with McLame/Fallin signs.

Man, I'm homesick

I live in a red county in purple Colorado, but two weeks out of every month since Feb. we have been living in southwest Texas caring for my 90 year old bedridden father in law who should die any time. He was a terrible man and father so this is out of a sense of duty, not love. Our time in Nov. is the first two weeks, so I will be there on election night. When we were there in August, 2008 when my mother in law died, I saw McCain bumper stickers and signs everywhere. This year, I'v seen about 3 Rmoney bumper stickers and only a few signs. Even though I know the "good white Christians" will vote GOP, they aren't visible supporting the Mormon. I am dreading election night.. if Rmoney wins this I will be inconsolable. My husband can't wait to celebrate an Obama win, and plans to leave the tv on in his father's room all night.
Of course, down there in the Permian Basin, business is booming. The unemployment rate is around 4% and houses sell in a week. That damn Obama!

The percentage of Obama yard signs vs. Republican is much higher this year -- almost even in some neighborhoods. Including in posh Nichols Hills!

Among people who support Obama, the disgust with rMoney is far deeper than it was towards McCain. I think we'll do a lot better nationwide than in '08.

There are so many reasons to stay.
I'm sure economic/job reason are high on the list. Oklahoma's unemployment rate is 5.2%. The cost of living here is ridiculously low.
My daughter just bought a house in Portland for 180,000. It would be half that here in Tulsa... and Tulsa has one of the higher housing costs.
Despite a few rough patches, the weather is pretty good. Fuel costs are low and...........

I used to drive a truck before gas got too expensive for my commute. I fight the stereotypes everyday and I think, like President Obama, I am making slow progress and I won't quit.

I think lots of people are afraid of having signs or bumper stickers showing their support for Obama because they're worried about the repercussions. Even in my very blue county, I've known several people who've gotten their cars keyed after putting on an Obama sticker. I can only imagine the courage it would take for people to put up an Obama yard sign in a very red area. Too many nutjobs on the right.

In my city ( mcminnville ,Or. ) i have seen quite a few yard signs for Pres. Obama and the only sign i see for Robme is a big sucker on a vacant lot on the main hwy out of town.

I was back there though to work the state fair. I haven't had a television hooked up to anything other than a DVD/VCR player for going on 20 years so I don't even get NBC, CBS, ABC, PBS, or FOX so when I lived in Oklahoma, I never saw political ads. When I came back though, I stayed in a motel and had the television on and was surprised to see some Obama ads. One of my friends who is a business owner in Tulsa and very conservative and religious also admitted to me that he has misgivings about voting for Romney even though he probably will, but I could tell he wasn't excited about the choice.

I am not from Oklahoma I came here for work. It has been a brutal place for a progressive woman to live. Yes, the people are nice, until they find out you are a Democrat and a Unitarian. I am lucky to work in higher ed, more sane folks in that group, although some of our Deans and Department heads are a little nuts.

I live in the reddest part of the reddest state, and trust me, they hate Obama. The curious thing about Oklahona, a state still living in the dark ages, is that we have appox, 640,000 people with no health insurance. Yet, the majority of the people in this state oppose the Affordable Healthcare Act. Most Okies also believe that Obama has cut the military, despite the fact that he has increased military spending each year that he's been in office. Another curious aspect of Oklahoma is the women. Most will vote for Romney, despite the crazy statements about rape and abortion coming from the right. Oklahoma also is home to the most rightwing newspaper in America, the daily Oklahoman. One of our Senators, a lunatic by the name of Jim Inhofe, goes around the state telling people that Obama has disarmed America. My wife and her family (all progressives) are from the Tulsa area. To be honest I think all of us would be shocked to NOT see a repeat of the 2008 statewide Nobama type sweep. I saw more Obama bumper stickers in 08. I see more now. So what? Nobody was excited about McCain. Nobody is excited about Romney. I work in a hospital where a disproportionate number of my peers are a) educated and b) women. It seems to me that only in the ICU where a good number of us are irreligious and have a knowledge of what is going on outside of the bubble does it seem that the general anti-Obama sentiment is lacking. Anywho... to think of Oklahoma as purple is wishful thinking. I imagine that this state will catch up to the rest of the country somewhere around 2075. If you rounded up all the progressives in the state and put them in one county, then maybe Obama wouldn't get swept in Oklahoma. This place is a pit of ignorance. Sure it is more acceptable to speak one's mind than it was four years ago, but the majority of people are the type of brainwashed robots you expect to find over at freerepublic.com.

your thoughts and work experiences on this topic. I was googling "Why is Oklahoma a Red State?" after yet another conversation with a client that left my office yesterday. So..I was led to this wonderful website and had to join. I have read through most of the responses on this topic. Even though I have lived in Oklahoma all of my life and no stranger to the (many times) nonsense attitudes that are prevalent, it still somehow baffles me how I can run into so many people whom make lower middle income salaries whom claim to be a Republican party supporter. One of several conclusions I have come to is this...many people are easily persuaded by others whom are in a position of seeming authority and want to be liked by them or be included in a group with them. I understand this from my experience in an advisement to others profession. There are many, many people that are easily misdirected and I have spent countless hours/days/weeks in helping these persons to get repaired from this misguided influence. One client told me he and his wife honestly just followed his pastor's advise about many areas of his life...financial, political, etc because he and his wife respected this person immensely and wanted to be like him, liked by him, and included in his group. They simply chose not to use their critical thinking capability to investigate if the actions they were taking were in "their" best interests. I also have quite a few of my relatives that are on government/taxpayer long-term assistance...social security disability, VA disability. I am not against these programs and agree still to this day that we need programs such as these to help those among our society whom have no other way. What I find amazing is they wouldn't put out a liberals body that is on fire if they had the fire hose. I have had calm conversations with most of them regarding this amazing lack of understanding, however, it's like I was trying to tell them that the world is round..they won't accept it. I am not by any means a political activist type of person, but if the subject comes up, I will tell them EXACTLY what I believe with a smile and continue trying to help and educate those in the state of Oklahoma so they can make better fundamental critical decisions going forward.
