Like New Balance sneakers? Guess what-they're made in USA!

Just saw a show about how they're made. It didn't mention where the factory was, but I noticed that there was a "Made in USA" label. Guess I'll be switching from Easy Spirit.

Made in USA (and UK) stance

New Balance is one of several shoe companies that makes some of their products in the United States. Green America states in the New Balance Responsible Shopper company information page that around one quarter of NB's shoes are made in the United States.[4] New Balance owns six factories in the United States: two in Massachusetts (Boston and Lawrence), three in Maine (Norridgewock, Skowhegan, and Norway), and one in California.[5][6]

In 1994, New Balance manufactured 70% of its shoes in the United States.[7] In 2006, New Balance stated on its customer help site that "approximately 25% of the New Balance shoes sold in North America are Made in the USA and we will continue domestic manufacturing." [8] According to Fortune Magazine in 2006, "about 70 percent of its shoes are now made in China and the other 5 percent in Vietnam." [9]

The New Balance production facility in the United Kingdom has been, since 1982, at Flimby, Cumbria in North West England, where 28,000 pairs of shoes are produced each week.

made choices, the amount of choses have increased. I know because I was there when only one New Balance shoe was USA made, now there are several. You can find reasons not to buy New Balance USA made shoes, but please don't ever write that you care about american workers ever again. Big choices start as small decisions, as people gave New Balance more support, the company responded by offering more USA built products, same with companies such as Bill's Khakis and St. Croix Shop. We can put some skin in the game with the intent of forcing more production to be done in the USA, or we can fucking nitpick and watch more production go offshore.

next to the factory. When we go up the long flight of stairs to where the shoes are, we always ask for the ones made in the USA. Unfortunately there are not that many models. As another poster said, they are made elsewhere (China) and only assembled here. Why not just do it all in the USA? I am so sick of this offshoring for profit. It's time to give breaks to companies who do manufacture in this country and stop giving breaks to those who manufacture out of country, as our President says.

"The goal of the U.S. government is to reduce tariffs down to nothing so there can be fair trade," Treat told the group during an evening public forum. "With the trans-Pacific trade agreement, countries such as Vietnam will say you want us to buy your corn? We say drop the tariffs.

Treat said the trade highway is a two-way street in which countries, including Vietnam and others, do not adhere to child labor laws, worker-safety regulations and wage- and hour-enforcement rules that are place in the United States. Recent studies, she said, show that labor cost in Vietnam is 35-40 percent cheaper than in China, where wages already are low.

If footwear is made in those countries it would be sold in America for much less than U.S.-made shoes, thus hurting jobs, Treat emphasized.

My reply is regarding the threat specifically to New Balance from China and Viet Nam if the Trans Pacific Partnership gets passed and footwear tarriffs are removed. Maine Democratic Reps. Sharon Treat and Jeff McCabe speak to this in the linked to article. I don't believe that is changing the subject.

I do buy American, my boots and clothes from Carhartt. As far as New Balance not costing more than alternatives, without the footwear tariffs now in place Viet Nam will sell shoes here for much cheaper than New Balance. They can do this because of virtually no labor laws in their country.

Maine New Balance workers join Susan Collins, Mike Michaud to argue for tariffs in DC

Shoemakers from Maine joined members of the state’s congressional delegation Wednesday on Capitol Hill to argue against dropping tariffs through a proposed trade agreement, charging that eliminating existing tariffs would hurt American manufacturers.

Negotiations continue regarding the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a free trade agreement that includes Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Vietnam and the United States.

We made our first pair of running shoes in 1938 and hold the distinction as the only company that still manufactures athletic shoes in the USA. One out of every four pair of shoes we sell in the U.S. is made or assembled here. Where the domestic value is at least 70% we have labeled them "Made in the USA".
