Just saw a show about how they're made. It didn't mention where the factory was, but I noticed that there was a "Made in USA" label. Guess I'll be switching from Easy Spirit.

(28,873 posts)I've worn them over the years, but I've always preferred
Reeboks mostly. They just fit and wear better.
I'll keep looking for New Balance, though. I do want to
support American made products.

(36,827 posts)Most athletic shoes seem to have a "one width fits all" mentality. I think Reebok has a few wide shoes, but not many. NB makes wide shoes in just about every shoe they make.

(11,175 posts)Approximately the last ten times I've bought shoes, my method has been to walk into a NB store, point to the worn-out pair on my feet, and say, "I want another pair like this one." The wide size makes a huge difference.

New Balance is one of several shoe companies that makes some of their products in the United States. Green America states in the New Balance Responsible Shopper company information page that around one quarter of NB's shoes are made in the United States.[4] New Balance owns six factories in the United States: two in Massachusetts (Boston and Lawrence), three in Maine (Norridgewock, Skowhegan, and Norway), and one in California.[5][6]
In 1994, New Balance manufactured 70% of its shoes in the United States.[7] In 2006, New Balance stated on its customer help site that "approximately 25% of the New Balance shoes sold in North America are Made in the USA and we will continue domestic manufacturing." [8] According to Fortune Magazine in 2006, "about 70 percent of its shoes are now made in China and the other 5 percent in Vietnam." [9]
The New Balance production facility in the United Kingdom has been, since 1982, at Flimby, Cumbria in North West England, where 28,000 pairs of shoes are produced each week.

(4,220 posts)I wear the regular width but I liked the idea that if need be they made wider shoes. It has been about 30 years, yikes... Good sneakers and the prices aren't too stupid although the real nice runners can be pricey but nothing like Nike for instance, which can be insane.

I also like NB considers pronaters, supinators and neutral arches in designing footwear for running. I wish they all were made in the USA but at least the model that suits my feet is still made here.

(10,942 posts)made choices, the amount of choses have increased. I know because I was there when only one New Balance shoe was USA made, now there are several. You can find reasons not to buy New Balance USA made shoes, but please don't ever write that you care about american workers ever again. Big choices start as small decisions, as people gave New Balance more support, the company responded by offering more USA built products, same with companies such as Bill's Khakis and St. Croix Shop. We can put some skin in the game with the intent of forcing more production to be done in the USA, or we can fucking nitpick and watch more production go offshore.

(2,091 posts)next to the factory. When we go up the long flight of stairs to where the shoes are, we always ask for the ones made in the USA. Unfortunately there are not that many models. As another poster said, they are made elsewhere (China) and only assembled here. Why not just do it all in the USA? I am so sick of this offshoring for profit. It's time to give breaks to companies who do manufacture in this country and stop giving breaks to those who manufacture out of country, as our President says.

Pending trade pact could cost Maine shoe worker jobs, forum told
Trans-Pacific Partnership, now in negotiations, would hurt state's New Balance factories, state representatives claim
>>>
"The goal of the U.S. government is to reduce tariffs down to nothing so there can be fair trade," Treat told the group during an evening public forum. "With the trans-Pacific trade agreement, countries such as Vietnam will say you want us to buy your corn? We say drop the tariffs.
>>>
Treat said the trade highway is a two-way street in which countries, including Vietnam and others, do not adhere to child labor laws, worker-safety regulations and wage- and hour-enforcement rules that are place in the United States. Recent studies, she said, show that labor cost in Vietnam is 35-40 percent cheaper than in China, where wages already are low.
If footwear is made in those countries it would be sold in America for much less than U.S.-made shoes, thus hurting jobs, Treat emphasized.

Like NAFTA, the Trans Pacific Partnership is another job killing trade deal.

(10,942 posts)The fact is New Balance has shown a determined effort to build more and more shoes in the USA. The company is very proud of that effort. Do all up us a favor, cut the diversionary bullshit and put your money where your mouth is. New Balance is a company that deserves our support. It's american made products DO NOT COST MORE THAN COMPARABLE ALTERNATIVES!!!!!!!!! I FUCKING KNOW BECAUSE I HAVE PURCHASED SHOES FROM THE COMPANY FOR THREE YEARS. THE CAP LETTERS ARE FUCKING INTENTIONAL!!!!
Teamster Jeff
(1,598 posts)My reply is regarding the threat specifically to New Balance from China and Viet Nam if the Trans Pacific Partnership gets passed and footwear tarriffs are removed. Maine Democratic Reps. Sharon Treat and Jeff McCabe speak to this in the linked to article. I don't believe that is changing the subject.
I do buy American, my boots and clothes from Carhartt. As far as New Balance not costing more than alternatives, without the footwear tariffs now in place Viet Nam will sell shoes here for much cheaper than New Balance. They can do this because of virtually no labor laws in their country.

(10,942 posts)so be careful. As New Balance has gotten support for it's USA choices, it has expanded the offerings. Interestingly, the USA made choices don't cost any more than the imported choices. Time for those of you that decry trade deals, outsourcing and the worker visa program to put your money where your mouth is.

which the Trans Pacific Partnership proposes to eliminate, New Balance can not compete and will fold or move off-shore. Workers make 46 cent per hour in Viet Nam as opposed to approx $10 per hour here.
Maine New Balance workers join Susan Collins, Mike Michaud to argue for tariffs in DC
Negotiations continue regarding the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a free trade agreement that includes Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Vietnam and the United States.

I am afraid that "Buy USA" is not enough. We must stop these job killing trade deals.
Edit: By the way, the TPP bans all "buy American" preferences in our procurement procedures.

(26,094 posts)As of about six months ago, three models were made here. A larger number are put together here from outsourced material, but the huge, HUGE majority are completely made and put together overseas.
I love NB, and run in them 90% of the time, and this is better than what most companies do, but the US manufacturing industry has been destroyed by outsourcing, and NB still are huge outsourcers.

(12,022 posts)I just found out that the chairman, Jim Davis, has donated $500,000 to Mitt Romney, and is against gay marriage.
I love New Balance shoes. They are the best shoes for my feet. I just posted about this earlier. But having come to this thread, and finding out about his anti-gay stance from the Washington Post, I realize that even the best product in the world cannot overcome the bigotry of its chairman.
And Jim Davis owns New Balance.
Fuck him. And, unfortunately, his product.

(12,022 posts)Just a few posts upthread, I told you all how much I love these shoes. I am now going to boycott them, after hearing that the chairman (and owner) is an asshole teabagger who not only has donated half a million bucks to Romney, but is now identified by gay rights groups as an anti-gay bigot. I feel sorry for the employees in New England. I feel sorry because these shoes are, at least partly, made in America. But I'm damned if I'll enrich the coffers of a bigot.
Any other shoes with a wide toe-box? I've been unhappy with Nikes.
