The right wing has lost the election of 2012.

Mitt Romney proves that right wing, tea party ideology is dead in America
Posted on October 27, 2012
The right wing has lost the election of 2012.

The evidence for this is overwhelming, yet it is the year’s best-kept secret. Mitt Romney would not be throwing virtually all of his past positions overboard if he thought the nation were ready to endorse the full-throated conservatism he embraced to win the Republican nomination.

If conservatism were winning, does anyone doubt that Romney would be running as a conservative? Yet unlike Ronald Reagan and Barry Goldwater, Romney is offering an echo, not a choice. His strategy at the end is to try to sneak into the White House on a chorus of me-too’s.

The right is going along because its partisans know Romney has no other option. This, too, is an acknowledgment of defeat, a recognition that the grand ideological experiment heralded by the rise of the tea party has gained no traction. It also means that conservatives don’t believe that Romney really believes the moderate mush he’s putting forward now. Not to put too fine a point on it, but if the conservatives are forgiving Romney because they think he is lying, what should the rest of us think?

I cannot say much more than that I hope you are right. I pray to Buddha you are right.

I see the second term of the Obama administration as leading us out of conservative hate, greed and darkness. Will he finish that job? No. But once number two concludes it'll be all but irreversible- i.e. good for us.

I'm 110% for single payer. I see that not only saving lives but being a huge boost to the economy AND a spiritual reawakening that us Dem's sense and will shock the Republicans. If only we can win in the next ten days.

Don't be fooled into complacency. The race right now is too close, and when the race is close it can be nudged by the republican's in their favor. Anyone who thinks Obama has this in the bag is deceiving themselves. The election will be decided by the swing states and that's where republican shenanigans are the most prevalent.

We have to win by an overwhelming margin or we will lose!

But I don't think Romney is aware of this and is shifting positions because of it. I think Romney is just floundering, the same as Palin.

There doesn't appear to be anyone with enough intellect in the GOP to understand what is happening.

that he is a true conservative. To some extent he succeeded as he won the Republican nomination. (Of course he faced a weak field of competitors.)

To win the Presidential election he has to appeal to independent voters. The Tea Party vote alone will not win this election even when coupled with main stream Republican voters.

I'm unable to determine exactly who Romney is and what he believes as he is a shape shifter. I suspect that he is a moderate or liberal Republican.

Citizens in our nation are becoming convinced that in order to solve the problems we face we need compromise. The Tea Party does NOT believe in compromise, therefore their influence is decreasing. The VERY liberal wing of our Party needs to also realize that because of the way the Founders set up the three branches of our government it is extremely difficult to achieve overnight changes and that true progress is a slow process.

While I feel that Obama will win this election but no matter who wins I believe that if we are to solve any of the problems we face we need to see the Republican and Democrats in Congress setting down respectfully to find areas of agreement and passing bipartisan legislation that the President will sign into law. Once the election ends both parties need to understand the responsibility of the elected members of their party is primarily to represent the voters who put them in office and to find ways to make our nation a better place. It is NOT to try to sabotage the goals of the occupant of the White House and his party in order to win the next election. It is NOT to sell out to the big corporations and special interest groups in order to obtain funds to finance the next campaign.

I suspect that when the economy fell apart just before the last Presidential election and Obama won big, the Republicans decided to do their best to insure that Obama would be viewed as a failure in his first term. They hoped to win the 2012 Presidential election and put a President in office who could win reelection for a second term when the Great Recession finally ended. It was probably also their plan to continue to control the White House with a second Republican president and hold the White House for at least 12 years. They hoped to repeat history and duplicate what happened after Carter lost to Reagan who won reelection and was followed up by Bush the Senior.

We need to show the Republicans that they made a tactical error. We can do this by showing up at the polls to vote!

is that if both parties and their supporters continue to degrade and insult each other we will see little progress in our nation.

It's great fun to play this game but if we ever hope to achieve ANY progress in our nation we need to show at least some respect to our opponents. Republicans need to stop calling Democrats socialists and Democrats should also be careful in the level of insults that they use.

Of course DU is merely an internet forum and your opinions and mine are totally irrelevant. I have no real problem with you when you compare the Republican party to the Taliban. However I personally feel that there is actually little real difference between both parties and consequently compromise on many important issues is possible.

I worry because there does seem to be a noticeable level of serious hatred between both major parties in Congress. This level of animosity seems higher than I have witnessed in the past and I am 66 years old. I feel that this largely is the reason that we have not recovered from our Great Recession.

I feel that the rise of the Tea Party has greatly contributed to the divide between the two major parties. All the propaganda pushed by the Republican party was responsible for the rise of this ultra conservative fraction of their party. It probably was an unintended consequence.

By launching a campaign of calling Obama a socialist and saying that he wasn't born in the United States the Republicans created a monster. I can only hope that they learned a valuable lesson. While the Tea Party helped the Republicans in the midterm elections their elected representatives often opposed the leadership of the Republican party. Tea Party members also often proved unqualified to hold political office and were an embarrassment to their party.

Compromise has become a lost art in our nation and we make little headway in addressing our problems. The lack of respect and trading insults has contributed to to this problem. In my opinion both parties need to tone down the rhetoric

While I strongly disagree with most of the positions of the Republican Party I will treat Republicans with some respect. That's just me. Feel free to insult Republicans or even me if you choose.

Perhaps I am being overoptimistic in hoping that some civility will return to the Republican party and they will be willing to compromise on important issues. I fear for our future if the people we elect to represent us in Congress continue to squabble like children in an unsupervised playground.

Unfortunately many experts feel that Republicans will continue to control the House and that most members of the tea Party will win reelection. Compromise may continue to be a lost art between our two major parties.

DU is a great place to post. I've learned a lot since I started posting here. Glad to see you on board.

liberals excoriate rightwingers on the Internet. Rightwing/nutbag/Teabag/Republicans spew their hatred out in public, from the floors of Congress and through the TV channels and from hate radio, etc. They are the ones who consistently refuse to compromise (they'll happily shut down the government if they don't get their way). It's not a "both sides do it" situation -- it's a radically lopsided situation where one group is publicly foaming at the mouth with hatred, racism, misogyny and plans that make life a living hell for anyone who is not a white, straight, Christian male.

this is what the republican's do, the RELENTLESSLY claim victory and the high ground while RELENTLESSLY screaming about the downfall of liberalism and the democratic party. They believe it, because by nature they are self indulgent. But, it also serves to create the larger thoughts along those lines.

If democrats had even one testicle, this would be the outtake from how this election APPEARS to be heading.

Make no mistake, the republicans WILL talk down a BO win, they will find one stupid A pointm coalesce around it, repeat it endlessly and have the "liberal media" babbling about how weak of a reelection it was.

The messaging from the democrats should be aggressive - "this is a flat repudiation of extreme right wing ideology. EVERYTHING was in their favor this election with a modest economy, and they put all their energy into defeating this president, yet he won reelection, the senate and house both picked up seats. This is a CLEAR message from Americans that they don't want the safety net destroyed, and they don't want republican's to be in the ones who drive any kind of reform. America CLEARLY trusts democrats more to make the kinds of tough decisions we need to make to get the federal budget shored up and STRENGTHEN, not destroy SS and healthcare."
