Meatloaf "would do anything" to avoid military draft

AKA Marvin Lee Aday

There are conflicting origin stories about Marvin Lee Aday's unflattering stage name. However, it seems to have followed him from childhood, a gift from his angry alcoholic father. After attempting to dodge the Vietnam draft by gaining 68 pounds in four and a half weeks, Loaf ignored his draft notice and founded the band Meat Loaf Soul, which later became Popcorn Blizzard.

Just like Nugent, crapping in his pants to avoid the draft. Romney seems to attract chickenhawks like flies on a cowpie.

On October 25, 2012 Meat Loaf endorsed Mitt Romney for President of the United States, citing poor relations with Russia as a major reason he had been "arguing for Mitt Romney for a year". [64] Meat Loaf explained that “I have never been in any political agenda in my life, but I think that in 2012 this is the most important election in the history of the United States." He cited "storm clouds" over the United States, and "thunder storms over Europe. There are hail storms – and I mean major hail storms! – in the Middle East. There are storms brewing through China, through Asia, through everywhere."[64]

I knew lots of guys who were trying to find any way they could to avoid Vietnam. It was an unpopular war, and draft avoidance was common.

didn't support the war they were trying to avoid.

There were exceptions, of course. Willard Whatsisname comes to mind.

So it's fair to paint him with the chickenhawk colors.

7. Mittsy protested for the Vietnam War before he dodged the draft by serving in battle scarred France!

It seems rather odd to me that Meat Loaf would be humping for this guy if he, too, didn't have that "Let the stupid little people go" attitude.

6. Being massive didn't keep people out of the draft...there must have been something else up with him.

I know plenty of "husky fellows" (avoiding the F word, here) who got drafted. They came back from boot camp considerably svelter.

Do you have a link to that story? It sounds interesting...

8. Looks like it's from a brief item in Men's Fitness with no attribution for its claims

Some of the info appears to be from wiki's bio on him, but the draft info may have come from his autobiography. Another website describes it this way:

Meat Loaf was transferred to North Texas State University, after attending Lubbock Christian College. He then tried to fail an Army physical by gaining sixty-eight pounds in a mere four-and-a-half weeks. The Army still considered him fit, even though he had a trick shoulder, was colorblind, and was quite prone to suffering concussions. He ignored his draft notice two years later, when it arrived. His mother died in 1967, which led to him moving to Los Angeles, becoming a bouncer for a nightclub.

could be just that--a lot of bragging with no mention of a "Non-Qualified Recruit" designation after his blood tests came back!
