As disturbing and regressive as it is, this decision seemed like an inevitability since Trump was able to replace Ruth Bader Ginsberg. But, abortion has been a major hot button issue for decades, where national public opinion is consistently 65% or more pro-choice.
Do you think that this decision could be a rallying point that shifts the trajectory of where things seemed to have been heading for the midterms that boosts turnout of Democrats and independents and helps to shift the results of the midterms more in Democrats' favor?

(9,514 posts)But I don't see it happening. Maybe if you started an internet conspiracy theory that this is just step 1 in the New World Order's attempt to lock up any guy that beats his meat.

(1,879 posts)Like people who reflexively call for banning all erectile dysfunction or health insurance cut off as some kind of "punishment" as if no woman cares if her partner suffers (and in turn, she as well) because of it.

That could change, but the Republicans could also make it easier to dodge child support payments too. I remember a Republican state legislator in WI tried to do that a few years ago.

(1,302 posts)I'm from Massachusetts and in 1990, during the Republican primaries to replace Michael Dukakis, the candidates were William Weld, who was progressive on social issues (Rockefeller Republican) and some other guy who was anti-abortion.
It was obvious that year that the Democrats were likely to lose the governorship and since it's an open primary state, I voted for Weld in the Republican primary. That was the one time in my life that an exit polling person approached me after voting and I told them that the one issue I had turned out to vote on was abortion.

(32,158 posts)But it just handed Tom Malinowski victory in the NJ 7th.
His lead opponent in the GOP field of candidates voted against S49 -The Freedom of Reproductive Choice Act. Tom Kean Jr. is just as much a dirt bag as his father.
I think it will be as close as 2020 - but Kean Jr.'s vote in the State Senate is going to tip the scale in Malinowski's favor.
As much as the 'pending decision' sucks - it will help us maintain the 7th seat for a third term.

(12,265 posts)So many young people do not show up to vote in any elections except the presidential ones. The midterms will really mess with your lives people. Figure that out or watch this country be run by the christian taliban.

(81 posts)But don't believe it will meaningfully impact the Midterms. It's fresh news and will obviously be front page on the news cycle until something else pops up. Since, the court opinion will push the abortion decisioning to the states, you'll see different states from California to Florida issuing different guidelines so the impact won't necessarily be as "end of the world" to the voters as we may see it here. If anything, it may redirect already democratic voters from a state of lethargy to motivated anger.
Maybe I'm too pessimistic, but voters are going to be stuck on their pocketbooks.
