(624 posts)during wartime. Aren't we at war?
ProfessorGAC
(65,853 posts)No.
So, said law does not apply.
And, no we are not at war, except metaphorically.

(116,421 posts)Here it is: https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/50/4533 Have a look, then let us know where it authorizes the president to command a private media company to broadcast a particular program, especially in light of the First Amendment's protection of press freedom (which includes the freedom to ignore as well as broadcast).

(3,301 posts)The First Amendment guarantees freedom of the press, which means the government can't compel the press to cover or report on a certain event. They can report or ignore a story as they see fit, and that's precisely how it should be.
Apart from that, stop and think this through: would you like a future Republican President to have precedent to use an executive order to compel MSNBC or any other network to cover something?

(116,421 posts)to order a private media company to broadcast a particular program? And do you actually know what executive orders are for? Hint: They are used to manage the resources of the executive branch or set policies for executive branch agencies to follow. They can't be used to command something just because the president wants it; that's despotism.

(6,580 posts)This would be in line with Putin firing/arresting anyone saying the word "war". Ye just can't do that in the USA.
It's amazing to me how many people who oppose a Trump/right wing dictatorship seem perfectly fine to let Biden assume dictatorial powers re: press freedom, freedom of speech, gun laws, due process, etc.
Yeah, we have to fight them, but that doesn't mean we become them.

(116,421 posts)But they are never OK because they can be turned right around on us if/when the balance of power changes.
And sometimes there's just plain ignorance of how our system works. We can't improve the system unless we understand it, thoroughly and completely.

(37,360 posts)Freedom of the press may be guaranteed in the Constitution. But a plurality of Republicans want to give President Trump the authority to close down certain news outlets, according to a new public opinion survey conducted by Ipsos and provided exclusively to The Daily Beast.
So that 43% of republicans would approve a democrat shutting down Fox news?

(192 posts)Now wait until one of the other Trumps get elected and uses this new power to order every channel to broadcast their speeches 24/7. Do people really not think this stuff through? We do not want to be North Korea.
