Some senior Republicans caution it might not be that easy.
If Romney loses, Ryan will be seen as a leading White House contender in 2016. He will be a national party figure even without being a top member of the House leadership. That could breed resentment among current Republican leaders and perhaps splinter coalitions within the already fractured GOP alliances at the top of the House.
A return also would make Ryan a leading target for Democrats. For the next few years, Democrats would lay traps in legislation, forcing him to take sides on measures that could come back to haunt him during a presidential bid.
That is why some of Ryan's biggest boosters are considering whether it wouldn't be better for Ryan to resign from the House. He could write a book "saving America" is a theme often bandied about or teach at a university.
Or Ryan could set up an office at a Washington think tank and focus on issues that interest him. That would give him a platform to shape public policy without the frustrations of electoral politics.

How Palinesque to dump the senior partner and think of his own future.
He wants to be President.

Maybe he could wash the already-clean dishes in a college cafeteria?

(7,515 posts)to win the WH. Ryan's chances of winning a presidential election after being the VP on a losing ticket are 4%. Republicans tried it with Bob Dole and Dems tried it with Walter Mondale....

(31,706 posts)When Willard loses the unhinged is sure to have a blame game to keep us amused for weeks and months on end. He'll be the ultimate fall guy since so many in his own corrupt party never really liked him and once he fails to deliver he'll be exiled. Ryan was a lifeline at best...a tepid attempt to placate the unhinged in the party and hope the boy blunder could woo the ladies (especially in light of the Akin remarks that had come out days before Pinocchio was chosen). The comparisons to Grifterella are apt except that Ryan isn't as inept and really does have a future...his taking one for the team will be seen as a positive and if he plays it right he can emerge in 2016 or beyond.
Ryan's problem...as with Palin...is he's too ambitious for his own good. He's got a very thin skin and we've heard constant reports of him "going rogue" and Team Willard getting him out of sight to avoid Ryan's conflicting and controversial voting record. After Willard falls, Ryan will try to emerge as the "savior"...using his muzzling as his badge of honor. But just like '12, he's gonna run into a crowded field...Christie, Hucklenutz, Rectorum and Gingrich will still be around and I wouldn't be surprised if Mooselini tries to "rehabilitate" or reinvent herself as well...the power vacuum in the wake of Willard going down will lurch the party further right...and further off the political abyss...
