What is a GMO?

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are made by forcing genes from one species, such as bacteria, viruses, animals, or humans, into the DNA of a food crop or animal in order to introduce a new trait.

Most corn, soybeans, canola, cottonseed, and sugar beets grown in the US are genetically modified. 61 countries require labeling of GE (genetically engineered) foods. Not the US.

Most opposition to GMOs comes from:

1. Confusing the technology itself with Monsanto's unscrupulous practices.

2. The reactionary "OMG, it's playing god" argument common both on the Fundamentalist Right and the New Age Left.

3. Popular prejudices about "mad scientists", many of Micheal Crichton's books are an example (Jurassic Park, Prey, etc.)

6. Technology in produce IS unscrupulous, Zipster.

You are confusing the technology with Monsanto's shady business practices.

And I only "support big pharma" to the extent that I think "alternative medicine" is snake oil. If it worked it would not be "alternative", it would be just medicine.

it will continue to attract all the vile that repeating lies endlessly does.

And all the money in the world will not stop it.

The industry needs to be honest and open. This current display in CA shows that it has a very long way to go.

There are some GMO products that are perfectly safe and harmless. It all depends on WHAT PARTICULAR GENE one inserts into the genome, and where, and how.

There are GMO products I would eat all day, and others I wouldn't touch with an ungloved hand.

As a plant-based eater, I eat quite a bit of corn but have been worried about the GM aspect, especially since reading the results of the recent France study.

If you wouldn't mind sharing more info I'd appreciate it!

other crops is not a problem.

This is a natural fertilization process.

How about Broccoflower?

Or do you only have problems with genes being combined in a lab?

Would in vetro fertilization then be a problem for you?

I honestly think all this uproar over genes being combined in the lab is little more than superstition.
