(21,551 posts)doing their first assignment and getting it all horribly wrong, yet the stories actually make it onto the web site with no editing. Frequent misspellings, bad grammar, incomplete sentences, and all sorts of other amateurish mistakes. Sometimes the stories are way too short; I remember one that was only one sentence long, and sometimes they are way too long, with boatloads of extraneous details. Sometimes they are clearly opinion pieces such as a recent diatribe by Ann Coulter, but are presented as "news." I think many of these unknown writers for Yahoo! are just journalism students sitting in Starbucks coffeehouses madly typing (and probably cutting and pasting material) to complete their articles quickly and get them sent to Yahoo! so they can get credit for them. The majority of people who post comments on the Yahoo! news stories seem to be right-wingers, and they constantly complain that Yahoo! has a liberal bias, yet I think they actually have a slight right-wing tilt. It would be OK if it was just another nutty right-wing web site but Yahoo! is trying to pose as a news organization so people take it seriously.

(14 posts)because it's childish hero worship for a person who ordered drone attacks which have killed scores of children.
As for Yahoo!, um...its sources are mainly AP and Reuters, which Christian Science Monitor sometimes... Pretty standard stuff...

(22,785 posts)I'm with you in your OP, but here's the great news.
The new CEO is a huge supporter of President Obama and has raised money for him.
She (yes a woman) is the youngest CEO of all the Fortune 500 companies. She's 37.
She's a brilliant engineer who graduated from Stanford specializing in artificial intelligence.
She was Google's 18th employee and designed Google's famous home page and was a big part of Google's early success.
She was picked to be the new CEO of Yahoo when she was 10 months pregnant (another glass ceiling crashing) and just had a baby boy.
She is shaking up Yahoo from top to bottom and attracting lots of talented people to Yahoo.
She's out to revamp Yahoo and she's off to great start already and Yahoo's stock just hit its 52 week high Friday when the rest of the market was down.
So, give the new CEO a chance. She's only been there 100 days, gave birth to a baby and...she's a big public supporter of President Obama. So take heart. Things there are changing.

(19,458 posts)It will be telling if she continues the obviously right wing efforts by their news division. Hope not.

(19,458 posts)They have a woman from Google now, but until this summer, they had a guy straight from the ranks of Fox News. They have been HORRIBLE this election season! Their "the Ticket" political news is written by hacks... worst thing ever.
Ross Levinson, A direct report to Rupert Murdoch: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ross_Levinsohn (his specialty is digital media) Hoping the new CEO will reverse that trajectory.
