Cops: Newborn stabbed to death hours after birth

A 21-year-old Clarke County woman accused of stabbing to death her newborn was arrested and jailed on Friday morning, according to police.

Investigators have not yet determined when the baby was born, but believe the boy lived only hours, Capt. Clarence Holeman with Athens-Clarke County police told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“We know it (the birth) was sometime today,” Holeman said by phone on Thursday night.

Police issued an arrest warrant late on Thursday for Cassandra Elyse Norwood of Athens, and she was placed under guard at an Athens hospital, police said.

Heartbreaking, just heartbreaking.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I read the title but it's also exacerbated by the fact that other mothers have been arrested for infanticide.

so far, she has not been not receiving psychiatric treatment at the hospital before being sent to jail.
The family didn't know she was pregnant and there is no known history of drug abuse.
been the lead story here in Athens for the last 2 days.

Very sad, infanticide after childbirth is usually due to profound postpartum depression (melancholic filicide) and it is often accompanied by suicide. It is a sudden and very profound form of PPD (postpartem depression) that closely resembles a profound psychotic break complete with vivid auditory and visual hallucinations, utter despair, feelings of profound worthlessness, waking terrors, self-harm, etc...

I agree that it was likely PPD. So sad...kind of reminds me of the case of that poor 14 year-old girl from Florida who hid her pregnancy from her family and committed infanticide right after birth

and carry no stigma. If this mother hadn't had a child she couldn't handle, she wouldn't have ruined her life and killed a being able to at least somewhere appreciate it's predicament and pain.
