Some Dare Call It Treason

http://www.thepierceprogressive.org/calltreason

While the newly inaugurated Barack Obama was dancing with Michelle at various locations in D. C. on the night of January 20, 2009, a three-hour meeting was being held at the Caucus Room, a swanky restaurant in the nation’s capital. Nineteen Republican leaders discussed ways they could undermine the new president’s agenda in order to win back power for the GOP. As early as the next day, they began to implement their strategies, and looking back over the past 45 months, we can see how well their tactics have worked. Can their actions be seen as sabotaging the health and welfare of the United States, against the best interests of this country for political gain? Can this be considered treason? What is treason? And who was plotting against the legitimately elected Democratic president?

Robert Draper, who has written for the Texas Monthly, National Geographic, GQ, the New York Times, and Rolling Stone, wrote a book earlier this year based on his access to the members of Congress. Entitled, "Do Not Ask What Good We Do: Inside the U. S. House of Representatives", it was labeled by The Wall Street Journal a 'refreshingly balanced account'. In that book, Draper lists the attendees at that seminal session, including Republican Representatives Eric Cantor (Va.), Kevin McCarthy (Calif.), Paul Ryan (Wis.), Pete Sessions (Texas), Jeb Hensarling (Texas), Pete Hoekstra (Mich.) and Dan Lungren (Calif.), along with Republican Senators Jim DeMint (S.C.), Jon Kyl (Ariz.), Tom Coburn (Okla.), John Ensign (Nev.) and Bob Corker (Tenn.). Also in attendance were Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the House, past and future presidential candidate, and Frank Luntz, who has been instrumental in crafting communications for right-wingers.
\
Cantor is Majority Leader of the House, and Ryan, House Budget Committee chair, issued a draconian budget, which won him the attention of Willard Romney, resulting in his nomination as candidate for Vice President. Ensign would be exposed shortly after this meeting as having an affair with the wife of his top administrative aide, which cost his parents $96,000 as settlement. Kyl has alleged that over 90% of what Planned Parenthood does is abortions, which is completely opposite the truth. Other guests on that list have their own issues, especially as viewed by progressives.

When I first heard about their vow to do what it takes to bring Obama down - which happens to be at the expense of what is best for the country - I cried out, "That's treason!"

This kind of voting by self-interest has been going on a long time. But never has it been so blatant, so unapologetically flaunted, and so very destructive, as it has been this past four years.

I fall short of demanding public hangings, but I think those involved in this anti-US conspiracy should at the very least be relieved of their jobs. (Didn't they take an oath which this violates?).

These oafs may all have had evil intentions, but they needed Luntz to put their plans into palatable words to be spouted on Fox and National Hate Radio to put them into the minds of their unthinking masses. Just read the comments section on the blogs of papers like the Washington Post to see how effective he is. Well over half the posts by right wing tools on those pages quote Luntz without ever knowing they are parroting his words.

These people conspired in advance, to block any action by the president, no matter how much that blockage could damage their own nation, strictly for political gain.

Just because it was very organized doesn't change what it is.

Of course political parties are going to oppose and try to stop the policies of the other party - that's why they're in different parties.

People throw around the word "treason" and try to assign their own meaning to it, but it has a very specific definitation, and this ain't it.
