white birth rate is down, brown birth rate is up relatively speaking. It began trending this way when birth control became available and Roe V Wade became the law of the land. This also ties nicely to their opposition to welfare (even though most who benefit are white, they don't really believe it). As Ronbo Raygun said "you get more of what you subsidize" (in reference to "black welfare moms driving cadillacs&quot

... who they have courted, then abandoned, election after election. Until 2010 that is. After that election they proposed and passed more anti-abortion bills than in all of history. They really need those votes badly.

Without the anti's the R's got nothing ...

Anti-Muslim

Well, you get the picture.

Once out in the world, they have nothing for them.

The would take away healthcare, education, liveable wages and any safety net.

Not in these days of massive unemployment.

I doubt that the Republican leaders are for the most part that obsessed with abortion for its own sake. I think they're just trying to pander to the religious right - both wealthy donors, and working class churchgoers who may possibly be persuaded to vote against their best economic interests.

Or gay marriage. They only care about one thing--$$, and keeping it. See Romney, Mitt.
Someone else here posted a link to a great article explaining how the Evangelicals didn't really care about abortion either until the Repugs decided to use the issue to appeal to Catholic voters and within a few years the "pro-life" thing became the #1 issue in the Fundie churches.
I'm old enough to remember that when Roe passed the only major objections were from the Catholic Church. The majority opinion was "about time" and "now far fewer women will die from illegal abortions."

Christian brainwashing includes a real obsession with making babies. The Catholics always pressed this because they needed warriors to expand the religion worldwide. Other more modern denominations may not be so imprinted with this instinct, but it is there, and ultimately that is what the abortion battle is all about.

They don't give a shit about killing animals or people of other religions, although one would assume those are all part of God's great family. They are only interested in forcing people to have more Christian babies.

It would be interesting to offer up a law that says it is OK for atheists and Muslims to have abortions and see how many Republican votes that gets.

It's about controlling (1) women and (2) gullible (and compliantly scared) conservative voters.

Some Republicans are genuinely pro-life. Most of them use it as a wedge issue.
