General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsOn Election Day, I will be working for President Obama to protect your vote. What will you be doing?
I am so proud of my President. So proud that I can work as an attorney for him and help voters vote. So grateful that on Election Day, I will watch men and women who weren't granted suffrage under the original Constitution of our land, vote. I had my first polling place assignment emailed to me last night. I will have my credentials later this morning.
On Tuesday, I will proudly wear the credentials of the Democratic Party and President Obama, and I will do my part to ensure that the 14th amendment, the 19th amendment, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 are obeyed by those who find them cumbersome obstacles to their own power.
And on Wednesday, I will come back to OPs posted by other DUers that drone on and on about everything the President hasn't done for them. I will come back to OPs that use sources from the Libertarians, the far right, and the farthest left to attack our President. I will come back to posters who accuse me of being a 'DLCer', or whatever the purity trolls are calling Democrats who work for the party and President these days.
But the thing is...I won't be shaken by that ratfucking. I won't be shaken by the name calling.
Because I will have watched something glorious on Tuesday--I will have watched the franchise of millions of voters working together to elect a good man, a decent man, a man who cares for his Constitution, and for his citizens. I will have watched America vote. I will have watched the promise of that great document written not to far from my home come to fruition. And I will have done my small, but needed part, using the opportunity this great nation has afforded me to make sure that great document, our Constitution, is upheld for our fellow citizens who wish to vote.
And I will know that I helped. No, I didn't write a concerned OP on an Internet board...I wasn't part of the 101st Chairborne who recommended it...I passed no purity test. I got out the vote.
What are you doing on Election Day?

And then I'll come home and watch the results, and (I hope and believe) crack open a bottle of champagne.

(25,415 posts)Seriously. My older daughter is a Brownie and I will be helping out the Girl Scout election day cookie booth in our town. It helps the Girl Scouts out and that was our scheduled day. I will be doing this after voting with my girls, of course. After school. I will wait to vote then as they want to go with me.

(39,343 posts)In my county you have to submit Poll Watcher names a couple weeks ahead of time tot he Sup of Elections and the local DEM office forgot to put me and a few others on the Early Voting list, so we reminded them again and they forgot to put me on the list for Election Day watchers. They said I can however stand on the side of the road waving signs in traffic....
I tried to protect the vote, but the local office blew it again. Will Rogers was right, I do not belong to an organized party, I'm a Democrat.
So I will be sitting home and not helping. I'd love to help, but I cant stand all day and I wont be able to drive people to the polls in my old truck. I for sure wont be waving signs in traffic.
I'm not bitter, I'm just limited on what I can do and I wasnt taken advantage of and put to use.

In 2008, I put about 1,200 miles on my wife's car. This year looks to be on pace to reach 1,500. (Of course I've moved since then, lots more rural elderly and poor needing a ride.)

(37,549 posts)We will not challenge voters.
Other organizations exist to do that.
However, other shenannigans aren't going to be tolerated. Attempts to interfere with the voting process, attempts to intimidate--that's what we are there for.
Challenges to voters? We will make sure the law is followed.
Thank you for voting!!!
Ms. Toad
(34,075 posts)it is illegal on election day for anyone other than election officials to challenge voters. (All voter initiated challenges in Ohio are made in advance, in writing, and decided by the local BOE.)
One of our jobs, however, is to observe (and call for intervention) if the R (or other) observers are suggesting to election officials that certain voters should be challenged.

(417 posts)I'll keep that in mind, but I swear I will cut in line if I have to. Or jingle my keys until people move it along!
P.S. I was kidding about cutting in line. I know how some people feel about people who cut in line.
P.P.S. Key jingling is fair game.
Ms. Toad
(34,075 posts)Voters in line when the poll closes will be given cards that demonstrate they were in line at the poll closing time. The county I am observing used that today for the close of early voting. One of the directors was standing near the line, urging anyone who had friends parking cars to get them in line. She had her phone alarm set for 5:00, and when it rang started handing cards to the voters in line, working her way from the last person to the front of the line. No one not in line when the phone alarm rang was given a card.
And - yesterday someone did leave the line to go shopping, came back after the close, and was turned away. She argued for most of an hour (the time it took for the last voter to vote) but was not allowed to vote.

(65,076 posts)Your OP comes off as pompous and condescending. I have voted in every election since 1974. I don't ignore my civic right.
But, i have to work and i've got meeting from 8 until 10, 11 until noon, 1:30 'til 3, and 3 to 5. So, i'll be there when the polls open.
Sorry i can't be so "involved". Does my $2000 in DNC donations excuse me?
Or does being a good democrat who's still trying to show that dems can be good managers in this business climate no longer suffice?

(34,075 posts)I will be doing the same thing you are - and have already been doing it since October 2 (to the tune of around 90 yours by the end of election day).
That said, I am less than enthusiastic about Obama, but I am terrified of the alternative. Even though I am doing the same work you are doing, I am certainly put off by being characterized as a purity troll because I have serious reservations about President Obama positions on foreign policy - or the damage his administration has done by continuing the Bush era policies on civil liberties.
msanthrope

There's a difference bewteen having genuine concerns, and posting an OP like that a few days before an election.
As joshcryer's excellent OP indicates, this is about more than one or two issues, even one or two very important issues:

I will type in my browser this website, and sit back and enjoy a nice news day with returns coming in... leading up to the big moment, when President Obama finds himself back in the White House for another four more years. After which, I will probably cry happy tears and toast to four more years of Democratic rule .. oh, and it will be interesting to see John Boehner, Mitch Mcconnell and Eric Cantor crying and pouting, stamping their feet, in a typical Republican manner on Fox News. There will probably be an explosion over at IEB Network as Rush Limbaugh self implodes .. and Glenn Beck and Anne Coulter will melt into a greasy wax residue on their respective floors.
