Cool web page! shows you the elevation of any location in the world.

http://veloroutes.org/elevation/

With climate change, increased range of floods and storms, this is a cool tool to have.

I am betting that in the near future, homes for sale listings will emphasize elevation.

Pls kick for others to see if you find this useful.

the site also offers:
veloroutes.org is a route planning & geo-analysis tool for cyclists, runners, walkers, hikers - people on the move.

Create a route and see the elevation profile before you go
Calculate the percent grade (steepness) of any hill
Auto-routing - follow the road between two points
Export any route to Google Earth (3D)
Generate Google directions for any bike route
Upload a route from your GPS device and save it on a map
Find new routes in your area
Find the elevation at any address
Tools for mobile devices

which is only 39 feet above sea level.
That is measuring the downtown close to the bay elevation, but still, I much prefer my current home, which is 439 feet.

I used to drive past an area in southern CA where the sea level was marked on the water tower--and we were about 15 feet below. a very interesting feeling.

I tried to dig a flower bed.
Dug a couple feet down, and the next day the flower bed had water in it.
And the next rain that hit, all my expensive flowers and carefully blended soil and peat moss floated away.
So I bought an African violet and called it my garden.

Not sure which part of a city they are measuring.
I only knew about Mobile's downtown level because I had lived there.

I knew my apartment was around 60-65 feet above sea level, just from looking at topo maps of the area (nearest benchmark is at 64'.) The site pegs us at 75', so that may be due to how built-up the lot is. There's a good eight-foot difference between our courtyard and the street.

I might even be able to use this site in my field of mapping (although we use surveyor data and DEM maps primarily.)

Having said that, I have to add... we still are ever vigilant!
