General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsLast night I watched some Youtube videos of reactions when Obama was pronounced
the 44th President of the United States. The catch in Keith Olbermann's voice, sobbing, cheering students at Spelman College. Teary, roaring crowds in Grant Park, Times Square, Kenya, Beijing, London, everywhere. Political pundits and jaded jouralists overcome by the profound event and by how far we have come as a nation. Jesse Jackson. McCain pledging to work with President Obama. What a night.
Then I thought of those small, petty, evil Republican men who--like Mr. Potter or Mr. Burns clones--gathered to plot Obama's downfall on Inauguration night, no less. I started to cry.
The Republican party is filled with the most vile, arrogant, unpatriotic, greedy, mean-spirited, evil, and un-American people I have ever seen in my lifetime. We must work our hardest to vote out as many as we can on Tuesday so we can reclaim our nation from the vile grip of these ignorant, arrogant, destructive killers of the American Dream.
YES WE CAN!
Forward.

(13,776 posts)I saved it on my DVR (I'm so sorry, I don't have a clue about how to transform that into a YouTube video that I could post here). It was so wonderful to see all those happy faces. And when they showed the scene inside Ebeneezer Baptist Church... chills. It won't be quite the same on Tuesday night because 2008 was the end of such a horrible period of American presidential history, but in one way it'll be even better because the Koch brothers/Citizens United groups/Romney are so much more contemptible than McCain.

Search for DVD to mp4 programs from CNET as they are screened and safe.

(13,776 posts)If you knew me, you'd know why your post was inadvertently hilarious.
I can't even TURN ON our DVD player without having to ask for help. No, that's not quite true... I've got the turning-on part down, even though getting it to play on the screen is complicated for me... but recording on it? And yes, it is supposed to be able to record stuff. I just can't figure it out without crying (not the happy kind of tears). I think I could probably put a disk into my computer, though... I've done that a couple of times.
Maybe when my daughter has some free time, I'll show her your post and ask for her help. I do genuinely appreciate the suggestions!

(34,074 posts)It remains a great sadness that my ability to celebrate the inauguration of the nation's first Black president - a day I did not really expect to see so soon - was ripped away because of the prominent role given to the hateful Rick Warren. Many GLBT individuals had put our own needs on the back burner, campaigned our hearts out, and financially supported the election of Barack Obama, only to be rewarded by the inclusion of Rick Warren in the inauguration.
I am grateful that President Obama has truly changed since that day (and I am convinced it is an inner change, not just political expediency), but it does not erase the pain associated with that lost celebration.

(11,816 posts)this week, from Texas to either NY or PHL (I forget which).
The husband joked that they noticed the temperature in First Class (where they were sitting behind Rove) was distinctly lower than in the rest of the plane.
The wife said that Rove was jostling to get in front of her, and she turned to see who was pushing, and "he looked like such a sad and angry man" so she just gave him her brightest, cheeriest smile, and he seemed somewhat taken aback.
A truly vile person indeed.

(20,776 posts)To President Obama's win in 2008. I can't believe that this announcer had said... "That their man Barrack Obama was their home town "boy", adopted "home town boy"... well hear it for yourself:
I hope HEADS EXPLODE at Fox News this year...

(13,776 posts)I'd expected weeping and gnashing of teeth, but overall the pundits behaved better than I would have thought they were capable of.
That being said, the joyousness of the coverage on MSNBC, with the students laughing and crying (remember that girl huddled on the floor at Spelman who was so overcome?) and "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" playing... that was so wonderful!

(20,776 posts)Maybe they didn't have their full talking points down yet.. but during the next four years.. everything from Glenn Becks statement of Obama being a Racist, to the crap we have seen today.. has showed, they have not matured, but made things worse in this country by drumming up the hate, and turning it up a notch or two each year.
Haters gotta Hate.

(12,022 posts)Even the un-rich Christians who think they are so patriotic are NOT voting FOR the future of this country. They're voting AGAINST this darker-than-them-skinned man who they're convinced is a communist Muslim.
And that's the 100% honest truth.

I do remember, when Obama was elected - It was early in the morning, and I wake up, switched on the TV (BBC world service) to se who won the election - I hoped for Obama, but feared McCain... When Obama was shown as the president I just stand in front of the TV and said as loud as I could YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES.... I guess some of my nabours believed I had going over the deep end because of it...
The day got much better by that news...

(34,402 posts)Obama or McCain, and I was absolutely stunned when, at 11:00 pm, all stations simultaneously called the election for Obama. It never occured to me that they could call it as soon as the polls closed out west. Of course Obama won California, Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii. I sat for a second, then started whooping and hollering, tears streaming down my face. I heard noise outside & realized some of my neighbors were so excited they ran outside. I joined them, then others, and it turned into an impromptu block party. It was awesome. I was so proud of my country that night and so ashamed of it now that the Republican party has so much support. What the hell is wrong with people?
Thanks for sharing your story from "across the pond"!

What a gift! After the 2000 selection that broke hearts coast to coast and the agonizing days that followed, having this president declared the winner right as the polls closed was a healing of sorts.
