That's as close to an admission of defeat we're likely to see from the Romney camp, including after the race is officially called for Obama.

They'll cite fatigue or medical issues, though.

and understand a little bit what it's like.

She should have been pacing herself all along and my guess is that she was. Those of us with chronic conditions deal with flare ups, medications, and have a very good idea of what we can handle.

She is "scaling back" because the campaign wants her to scale back - they see her as a liability.

After her appearance yesterday where her body language and tone clearly telegraphed, imo, that they already know it's over, that the "you people" she despises feel the same about her husband, it is easier for her to return to her 'gated' reality than to be there to the end.

someone who believes they're winning. As a matter of fact it's the face of someone trying very hard to look optimistic. Immediately after she spoke Mitt wanted to thank everyone there for working to get him elected.

It sounded more like a concession speech than a rally to charge everyone up for a big win.

I have to admit I was taken aback at how clearly both Romneys, by tone and language, spoke as one would AFTER an election loss. It certainly confirmed to me their internal polls must be pretty devastating, showing the crucial swing states are lost to them.

then they jet off in a private plane to somewhere else. Not exactly taxing for a first-lady-in-waiting. Her MS is "in remission", and frankly, I've known many people with MS that have to hold down f/t jobs, raise kids, and run a household, when it was not in remission. Ann's schedule is not exactly harsh. She doesn't have to lift a finger...
