In a confusing turn of events, the Miami-Dade elections department shut down early Sunday afternoon after too many people showed up to request and cast absentee ballots in person.
The department had opened its Doral headquarters from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. as a work-around to an early-voting crackdown law.
But by 2 p.m., around 180 voters had showed up, and department spokeswoman Christina White said the office would not be able to accommodate any more voters who showed up. Additional voters would be turned away, she said.

(7,290 posts)There was a suit, but no ruling. The decision to re-open was at the discretion of the Supervisor of Elections, and it was in-person absentee only, not regular early voting.

(13,390 posts)I just walked in and told them I had to leave town the next day and they gave me a ballot. She asked a couple of questions to validate my polling place, and gave me the ballot.
How does absentee voting work in FL?

(17,111 posts)@PatriciaMazzei: Miami-Dade elections now says it will re-open for all in-person absentee voters in line by 5 p.m. What a mess.

(6,823 posts)A court order, someone called the police? They broke the law by closing the doors. Hope someone got in touch with a campaign lawyer and they laid down the law. This shit needs to be nipped in the bud immediately so the Repubs don't think they can get away with any of this crap this election. Peace.

(212 posts)All the "mistakes" that keep people from voting is really adding up this year. Sounds to me like the folks that work there didn't want to be there on Sunday and were going to close up no matter what.

(2,830 posts)Why? Because these anti-American douchebags will get away with it. Hell, most of them will keep their jobs because there is one side who sees democracy as the enemy.
I have NEVER heard the same anti-vote sentiment echoed by the left. EVER! Sure, both sides gerrymander, which I don't agree with along political lines, but only one side is trying their hardest to suppress the right to votes.
If the Democratic Party was systemically engaged in the same behavior, I'd walk out and never look back, but they're not.
This is a GOP agenda.
They refuse to reach out to minorities.
They refuse to reach out to women.
They refuse to reach out to anyone who isn't a Christian.
Their old white Christian voter base is dying off so naturally they are turning to the tactics of fascism to retain their substantial and well-funded political control.
THIS MUST BE STOPPED NOW!!!
