On my canvas today, I had a teenage girl tell me that she was excited for Tuesday because her school was closed for election day. Nice idea, but quite untrue.

Getting to the polls during before/after work windows can be a real pain, especially in states that don't have early voting options.

It isn't, but employers are obligated to give employees four (paid) hours off to vote if there's a chance their shift will conflict with the poll times.

The schools are open on election days here, and more often than not they're the polling stations, too. S'kinda neat to watch them get their civics on.

Schools, colleges, the hospital, churches, synagogues, county offices, art museums - pretty much if its a building open to the public, you can bet money its someone's assigned polling place!

That said - I have never stood in line more than 3 minutes waiting to vote - so I'll take it.

There are federal holidays but those only affect federal employees.

Voting should be done over the weekend.

I am talking about a holiday on the level of President's Day, MLK, Jr Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, etc - where the banks, government (fed, state, local), schools, et al are all closed.

government employees).

No business is going to close on a weekday for Election Day (since nothing is stopping them now, but they don't).

That's why weekend voting is a better idea.

without knowing your commute, traffic is WAY lighter on national holidays + many people can vote mid-day as opposed to rush hour. Not all states have early voting.

DO NOT want anyone to vote - except THEIR people. They throw up roadblocks every step of the way, from all directions, all designed to keep people from voting or to make it such a hassle and time-waster that they give up.

. . . voting on a working day is more complicated than just getting permission to take time off. It's not as if there's paid leave.

One of the primary obstacles here is coming from folks looking to restrict the hours and number of days already alloted by state legislatures for folks to get their votes in. We can see the obvious need in these lines and the localities.

I LOVE that people are LINING UP to VOTE!! It's always been my pet peeve that people in this country don't vote or serve on jury duty; too many people have fought and died for our rights-we should do our civic duties with pride!
