My grandpa is 91 years old and walks pretty slowly. He uses a cane but he doesn't like it. He does like it better than falling down but not by much.
So he's in line to early vote this week and and I guess someone inside the polling place saw him out there and and came and asked him to follow them inside. He said "No no, I don't want to jump the line...I'll wait like everybody else..." and the poll worker said "Oh, you won't be jumping, just please follow me inside" and he agreed and they went inside and got him a seat and the poll worker asked him "You remember who you were standing next to in line right? " He said yes and they said "OK, just watch for them and when they get here get back in line".
And about and hour later they came through and he got in line and voted for Obama.
He did say just to spice it up a little he presented them his retired military ID instead of his driver's license (He hates voter ID laws as much as his cane). He has a DL but it irritates him that they ask for ID so he gave them that. They did have find out if it was acceptable. (It was).
My Grandpa has always been one of my personal heroes. And I don't know who that poll worker was that helped a little old man rest while waiting vote but you are tops in my book.

Here in TN they have all those intimidate the liberal ID laws too. So, both my husband and I presented our military IDs (even though we have DLs). The poll workers scurried off then came back and let us vote. Too bad, we were all ready for a fight.
Sounds like we think alike.

(12,132 posts)He retired as CWO from the Air Force and then worked for the state for 20+ more years and he just would never let whatever rank or privilege he had trump fair play.
When I first moved here (almost 30 years ago) to go to school and live with grandma and grandpa they decided it was a PITA to drive me around so we looked around for a cheap car so I could get to school and work. we found a zippy 71 Firebird for 1500 bucks and went to look at it. It was worth the money so he paid the man (private seller) and asked for a hand written receipt so we could go get the tags and the guy offered to write down less than the 1500 so the taxes would be less. He never even batted an eye and just said "No thank you - we paid 1500 dollars and that's what we are telling the state." I was pretty young then but that has stayed with me all these years because that was just one example of how a man should act.
He doesn't make a big deal out of stuff like that. He never pontificates or lectures and rarely offers advice except when it's asked of him. He just quietly lives his life as fairly and honestly as he can and lets that speak for him. To me, that is the definition of actions speaking louder than words and Grandpa is the personification of it.

(100 posts)Twisted my foot and fell on Halloween, but have one sore foot and a cane to help take weight off while walking. Have been worried about long lines, but will go early vote at 9am today. I, too, will stand if needed as long as needed to vote for Obama and Biden! I will be 69 in a few days and the greatest gift I could receive is to have these two great men re-elected to office!

(43,198 posts)I've been a full time resident of Florida for 11 years now. But I've always loved the place, warts and all, since I was a kid and my parents took me on vacation to Florida every year and we'd go traveling the entire state.

(12,132 posts)I am actually a Florida native - born in Tallahassee (although there might some folks in Gainesville that would question if that counts as Florida lol) but I grew up more in Texas than anywhere else. We always came here on vacation, though, because both sets of my grandparents lived here. My grandparents took me to Disney World the first or second year it was open...and I remember great times at 6 Gun Territory, Weeki Wachi, Homassassa Springs...was there a Lion Country Safari down there somewhere?
My work brings me to Miami a couple times a year and I love going...the food and scenery are great.
