Calling a draw is the best thing the media can do really.

To predict an Obama landslide, as much as people who buy into "positive thinking" would have liked that, would be bad.

The idea of a "close race" is what projects the idea that every vote matters. It stimulates turnout on both sides and thus makes the result more "honest".

If it is in fact, a landslide , then it's a landslide. People are getting out to vote based Ecumenist Nov 2012 #1
The horse race is not designed to increase voter turnout Sherman A1 Nov 2012 #2
As Sherman A1 points out, that's not why they do it. joshcryer Nov 2012 #3
Sure, they have different motives, but I think increasing the turnout is an effect of it. redgreenandblue Nov 2012 #4

it is designed to fill air time, sell advertising and hold eyes on their broadcasts. It is in the media's interest to do so and that is the reasoning behind it. Look back to the GOP primaries and follow the progression of media circus through those.

Of course, you do make a legitimate point.

But if the media was really wanting to do that they could leave the last week free of any political coverage.

There, everyone goes and votes without knowing what the outcome is beforehand, and that one week of non-media interference in discussion allows people to have free and open discussion amongst themselves.

And so people don't say, "That hurts the freedom of speech and journalism." You could still allow the blogosphere to make its mind up.

Their motive of course is financial.
