Pissing Off the Customers

There was a time, I think, when business owners working with the public had the sense to shut-up about their politics. But from TPM:

“I think an awful lot of the country is becoming comfortable with the government taking care of them,” Rich Kelly, 59, said. “I think that’s a mistake.”

Kelly wore a blue polo shirt that read “Hard Times Cafe,” a local chain of 16 restaurants he owns with his wife. “There’s one thing I do very well, and that’s create jobs,” Kelly said. “In the last four years, I’m a bad guy.” According to Obama, he said, “I make too much money and I don’t share and I’m not, you know, I don’t play well with others.”

Well, here’s the thing. I pay taxes. A lot of taxes. I’m not part of the 47%. Truth be told, I’m not even part of the 99%. And yet, here I am voting for Obama. So, Rich, you can take your self-righteous whining and shove it.

And I can find somewhere else to get a bowl of mediocre chili in the DC area. And I hope other Democrats out there do the same.

1. I really dislike how businesses will put political signs on their property

I guess they want it in your face that they support scumney and if you don't like it they don't need your business. Because that's the chance they take. People may refuse to do business with them if they disagree with all that scumney stands for and in turn what the business owner believes.

2. There's a related trend, with Christian-themed company names and logos...

I see a fair number of businesses, like plumbing, or A/C service, or handyman, or what-have-you, incorporating that Christian-fish into their logo or signage, and with faith-based named themes, like Grace Plumbing, etc.

I realize that's probably not the same downside, since I'm guessing there are very few people like me who would be actively put-off by that kind of display. But it's a funny trend. I'm pretty sure I never saw anything like that when I was a kid.

8. I avoid those Xian-fish businesses too, every time.

Partly because it's insulting to me and partly because I believe they'd rip you off quicker than others would. It's as if they have a god-given right to be unethical. Self-righteous jerks, all of them.

9. I see that a lot around here too

And I see contractor trucks with scumney bumper stickers and back in 2008 McCain/Palin. I always found that a bad business practice because there are people who will avoid them because of it.

13. Companies that "God Bless You" on every phone call irritate me

When they answer, or hang up, or on their voice message.

No, thanks. If I wanted to be 'blessed' I would select what religious organization I go to. A business that inflicts that on me will not get my money!

5. We were vacationing on Chincoteague Island, VA Labor Day weekend, looking for a restaurant

Saw a nice looking place and headed that way. Then I saw a tea party flag.

We found another restaurant.

If the asshole had kept his politics to himself, he's have had four more customers that day.

11. There is a small photography business in my little town with a scumney yard sign
Tue Nov 6, 2012, 11:21 AM
Nov 2012

That probably isn't a big deal out here in christian conservative land and their business will not suffer. But if someone were truly put off by that, they may choose another photography company.

I really think, stupidly, some of these businesses don't want your business or care if they lose your business if you don't support their views. Haven't we read things over the years where some conservative businesses have refused to serve people who don't have the same views and beliefs?

I wonder if these places realize that they lose customers by declaring their political affiliation...and I'm sure it's the same whether the business supports republicans or democrats. This country is soooo polarized I fear it will crack.

Their businesses fail. Or they get laid off.

Who knows where this guy got the capital to start the business, too.

And the government does not take care of anybody. They act like it's either/or, full time on public programs or never.

10. I've been making a list
Tue Nov 6, 2012, 11:19 AM
Nov 2012

I've seen several businesses that have the "I built this" or "small businesses need Romney" signs around my area. They won't be getting my business anymore. They can vote however they like but those signs scream "I don't want to serve Obama supporters" to me. So I will abide and not give them that distasteful task. When they do go under they can self-righteously blame Obama rather than their own arrogance. If they don't understand public relations 101 then it is a wonder they stayed in business so long as they have.

It's a shame, I remember one of the early ones in Alexandria Va.

Now if Ledo Pizza did something like this, I don't want to know, lol. I will say that Ledo has gone downhill since they franchised it. They have a consistency problem.
