PA Voters. Poll workers MAY ask for ID. You do not have to show photo ID at all!

Last edited Tue Nov 6, 2012, 12:51 PM - Edit history (1)

Not in any situation! If you are a new at that poll voter, you only need something with your name and address. I showed them my electric bill.

But if you have voted at that poll before, YOU NEED NOTHING.

That being said, take your photo ID anyway, if you have it. But try not to 'have' to show it. You don't have to.

Read my post from this morning.

No, they "may", but aren't required to. And yes, you do NOT NEED A PHOTO even as a first-time voter. HopeHoops Nov 2012 #3

I went to the polls today with my govt issued ID just like the card I received in the mail indicated I should. When I got there I was told that because my ID was not issued by the state of Indiana I could not vote (my drivers license is issued by CT. at the time of registration I had to show a utility bill with my local address).
The problem was, nobody at the table offered any options. They just said I couldn't vote. I showed them where the card stated a govt ID but not Indiana ID, but that meant nothing. They sent me away.

In a state of shock (I've always voted and never been turned away before) in the parking lot I called a friend that reminded me of a provisional ballot. So I went back to the polling place to defend my right to vote.
After making me stand around for some time, a gentleman took me over to a table and pulled out a provisional ballot. At that time he also mentioned I could go to Motor Vehicles where they have a program all day by which people can obtain Indiana IDs so they can vote. This is all great, but I never would have known that if I hadn't come back.

Not trusting a provisional ballot to actually be counted, I will go get the Indiana ID, but they have not made it easy. You need your birth certificate, social security card, a govt sponsored photo ID (I'm imagining the CT license will be good for this purpose...?) and a utility bill with local address (this piece is easy). The fact of the matter is, I don't typically have all of those materials available, and don't imagine others do. Luckily, I had other reasons to collect these materials a couple months back so have them at hand.

I WILL VOTE TODAY because its my right to do so. Others may think that because the folks manning the tables are female senior citizens that somehow makes it okay for them to deny people their rights. I don't. They may be nice people but their job is an important one and they should be trained to handle issues, especially since there has been a lot of discussion about this pre-election.

It is amazing that there are people in this country who think their right to a gun is being taken from them when it's not, but have no qualms about the fact people are being stripped of their right to vote every day.

Well, technically first-time in that precinct. A utility bill, government issued check stub, or bank statement will suffice. NOBODY has to produce a photo ID (thank you Justice Simpson). If they ask for one, just say, "no thank you" and sign in.

But some polling judges are seeing that as 'required.'

Updated my OP.

If they ask if I have a photo ID, I'll say "yes". If they ask me to show it, I'll say "no thank you". This is nothing less than Republican bigotry used to try to steal elections. Turzai said himself - "Voter ID will give PA to Romney." He's wrong, of course, but it reveals the true purpose of the law.
