No matter what happens, I just want to say how much I appreciate everybody

President Obama today, at field office in Chicago, making calls . . .

“We feel confident we’ve got the votes to win that it’s going to depend ultimately on whether those votes turn out,” he said. “And so I would encourage everybody on all sides just to make sure that you exercise this precious right that you have that people fought so hard for us to have.”

“I also want to say to Governor Romney, congratulations on a spirited campaign,” the president said. “I know that his supporters are just as engaged and just as enthusiastic and working just as hard today.”

“No matter what happens, I just want to say how much I appreciate everybody who has supported me, everybody who has worked so hard on my behalf,” he concluded. “And again, I want to congratulate Gov. Romney and his team for a hard-fought race as well.”

The President got the guy next to him laughing so hard he reaches out to settle him down.

I am guessing the President screwed up the script by saying something like "I hope you will vote tomorrow".

such a class act. Can't imagine Willard paying compliments now....or ever. Maybe he will prove me wrong though.

He's done as a politician I think - so does he want to go the Elder Statesman route (in which case he should) or the Fox News/Sarah Palin route (in which case he shouldn't)?

I don't know - I would guess that his instincts are to go the Elder Statesman route - in which case he might well be gracious in defeat.
