Waiting in line at our neighborhood polling place there was a 50-something lady ahead of me who kept dropping her keys, her sample ballot, then her glasses. She apologized, explaining that she was nervous because she had never voted before in her whole life.
I congratulated her, and she laughed, saying that her son in-law had convinced her to register after her recent divorce, and now her daughter and grandkids were calling and emailing her on the hour to see if she had voted yet. So there she was, voting for the first time ever just so she could proudly send them a photo to show off her new "I VOTED" sticker.
The poll workers were very supportive, and a helpful gentleman walked her through the process using a practice voting gizmo -- we use the old Ink-a-Dot system -- available for virgin voters. While I was signing in, she still seemed a bit confused as she emphatically told the man that she only wanted "the Obama ballot", not the one for "that rich guy".
Obama got 2 more votes today.

(3,697 posts)She called crying because she had to work later than usual and thought the polls would be closed when she got off at 4. We just returned home from voting and she was so excited. She had talked 2 of her school friends to vote but they didn't understand you have to register to vote. Poor babies. I told them I would get them registered so they can vote in the next election.
