A Russian nuclear attack submarine was cruising the waters of the Atlantic Ocean as close as 200 miles off of the East Coast of the United States in what defense officials are saying is the latest sign that Russia is continuing to flex is naval and aerial power against the U.S. Officials are downplaying the potential threat of an attack sub detected so close to U.S. shores, and even gave the sub safe harbor in Florida during Hurricane Sandy.
The Russian Sierra-2 class submarine was believed to be a part of Russia's Northern Fleet, which means its outfitted with SS-N-21 anti-submarine warfare missiles, SS-N-16 anti-submarine warfare missiles, and torpedos. The Free Beacon reports that this is the first time that a Russian Sierra-2 class sub has been detected near a U.S. coast.
Speaking on conditions of anonymity to the Free Beacon, one official revealed:
"While I cant talk about how we detected it, I can tell you that things worked the way they were supposed to," adding that the submarine "poses no threat whatsoever."

Anyone who isn't fine with Russian military submarines patrolling near US territorial waters shouldn't be fine with US military submarines or warships patrolling near Chinese and Iranian territorial waters, right?
The only reason for why US military submarines or warships would even patrol near the waters of said countries would be to engage in provocation at the expense of the taxpayers.

"While I cant talk about how we detected it, I can tell you that things worked the way they were supposed to," adding that the submarine "poses no threat whatsoever."

(101,321 posts)This story seems to be a ripoff of the Daily Mail story on this, which made the same mistake. Looking at the original Free Beacon story (a RW rag, we ought to remember), it says:

Meanwhile, the officials also said that a Russian electronic intelligence-gathering vessel was granted safe harbor in the commercial port of Jacksonville, Fla., within listening range of Kings Bay.
The Russian AGI ship, or Auxiliary-General Intelligence, was allowed to stay in the port to avoid the superstorm that battered the U.S. East Coast last week. A Jacksonville Port Authority spokeswoman had no immediate comment on the Russian AGI at the port.

(26,602 posts)just dive under a hurricane (since the storm effects wouldn't come anywhere near as deep as the subs can hang out)...

(21,046 posts)That's what my parents told me.
My dad was in the Air Force when it was the Army Air Corps. He was at Eglin AFB in Tampa and said they watched Nazi submarines around Tampa and were told not to bother them.
He got a special citation for the American Theater and I thought that was quite fascinating, since the civilians did not know there was an American theater of war.
Oh, and 2 bronze stars in the 483rd Bombardment Group.

Constituted as 483rd Bombardment Group (Heavy) on 14 Sep 1943 and activated on 20 Sep. Trained with B-17's. Moved to Italy, Mar-Apr 1944, and assigned to Fifteenth AF. Began operations in Apr 1944 and served in combat until late in Apr 1945, hitting such targets as factories, oil refineries, marshalling yards, storage areas, airdromes, bridges, gun positions, and troop concentrations in Italy, France, Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Rumania, Yugoslavia, and Greece. Received a DUC for action on 18 Jul 1944 when, without fighter escort, the group engaged numerous enemy aircraft in the target area and also bombed the objective, an airdrome and installations at Memmingen. Assisting the strategic bombardment of enemy industry the group received another DUC for braving fighter assaults and antiaircraft fire to bomb tank factories at Berlin on 24 May 1945. Struck targets in southern France in preparation for the invasion in Aug 1944. Operated in support of ground force in northern Italy during the Allied offensive in Apr 1945. After V-E Day, transported personnel from Italy to North Africa for movement to the US. Inactivated in Italy on 25 Sep 1945.
By the way, Eglin Air Force Base is located approximately 3 miles (5 kilometers) southwest of Valparaiso, Florida in Okaloosa County. That's in the Florida panhandle and pretty far away from Tampa.
Maybe you meant MadDill AFB which was one of two major Army Air Corps bases established in the Tampa Bay area in the buildup prior to World War II. Tampa's Drew Field Municipal Airport, established in 1928 was leased by the Air Corps in 1940. A major expansion of the airport was initiated and Drew Army Airfield was opened in 1941. Headquarters, Southeast Air District was first activated at MacDill Field on 18 December 1940. It was later re-designated HQ Third Air Force and moved to offices in downtown Tampa on 8 January 1941.

(21,046 posts)He said their motto was "A plane a day in Tampa Bay" because it was very shallow.
He moved around a lot. He was in Washington State near the Hanford facility. He said he knew a secretary who worked there and asked her what they did and she said "I don't know". He said "You're intelligent, you've got to know what's going on."
He said they had orders to not fly over Hanford either, or they would get shot down. So he knew that there was something secret of national importance going on there.
When they dropped the atomic bombs on Japan, he figured out that Hanford must have been one of the places they were doing research on atomic bombs. He was right. It's a nuclear plant.

(3,526 posts)1. The Russian sub was outside the 200-mile US territorial limits...no big deal;
2. We just told the Russians we know exactly where their subs are located at all times. If they didn't know that before, I'm sure that was a bit of a shock;
3. US attack subs have patrolled in or near foreign waters for decades...99.9% of the time they're gathering intelligence on radar/sonar sites among other facilities, and mapping the sea floor. US subs carrying nuclear missiles stay in deep water and never get close enough to be detected by any foreign military.

(47,675 posts)Nuclear war between the US and Russia is not a threat. Rogue states are. Both of our countries know better and if there is a nuclear conflict we'll work together. This isn't the 50's.
