Rape reporting, prosecution, and conviction rates across the country are appallingly low, but its easier to get away with sexual assault in some places compared to others. Pennsylvania is one of those places. In Pennsylvania, expert testimony isnt allowed in the courtroom. Instead, jurors frequently rely on abundant, harmful rape myths.
We shouldnt be that surprised, then, that earlier this week the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) aired an ad plainly promoting the idea that women are to blame for being raped.
The ad shows a young woman sprawled on what appears to be a bathroom floor, underwear down at her ankles, with the caption, She didnt want to do it, but she couldnt say no. The victim blaming here couldnt be any clearer, right down to the illogical language suggesting that the victim both had agency (she is to blame) and lacked agency (because she couldnt say no).
Crafted by the Neiman Group, this ad was part of a larger $600,00 campaign two years in the making to raise awareness of the ill effects of drinking. Several different themes were proposed, but this was the winner. Another ad in the same campaign holds a rape victims friend responsible for her rape.
The PLCB pulled the ad campaign in response to hundreds of messages from concerned citizens, some of whom claimed they were traumatized by the image/message. However, a statement from the PLCB shows that those in charge still dont comprehend the problem:
We feel very strong, and still do, that when we entered the initial discussion about doing a campaign like this it was important to bring the most difficult conversations about over-consumption of alcohol to the forefront and all of the dangers associated with itdate rape being one of these things.

(129,228 posts)That's usually my only peep into the Pennsyltucky world from way over yonder here in Philly.
Every year that I watch it, I keep pinching myself saying - these people are from PA?

(47,675 posts)They crowned "Miss Poultry" and had a photo of her in the Patriot-News. She was holding a chicken and texting on her iPhone, seemingly completely uninterested in having her picture taken.
They had some pictures in today's paper with quotes from various people. Most were about how wonderful the fried lard type "food" was. I warned her that there wouldn't be much she would eat (we're all vegetarian).

(129,228 posts)I finally had chance to watch a re-airing of the "Sheep to Shawl" competition. Truly talented folks. My BIL likes the horse-pulls. He was actually thinking of driving out there this past weekend but my sister talked him out of it.

(47,675 posts)Face it - however many can cram in a car get into an event with no cover charge for $10 to park. That's not bad these days. But it has been a contentious issue for people who want to go every day. It's still cheaper than if they charged admission PER PERSON!
Besides, most people only go once each year. The "every day" people complain about parking but will drop $3.00 on a stick with deep-fried lard on it. Go figure.
This is a very red area of the state.

(129,228 posts)we'll probably be paying $21 to park at the Philadelphia Flower Show. All the area lots are required to set their prices a month in advance and then keep them there for at least a month, so they will be upping them shortly just for that. The Flower Show itself is $27 per person (at the door, with discounts for members) so you can imagine the sticker shock for that.
Sounds like the Farm Show is a good bargain though. It's just so iffy to get out there this time of year - usually alot of frozen stuff around this part of the month. The mild temps that we've had probably would have made this the year to do it though.
Thank you for the info on the cost! Wasn't sure how they worked it.
