Captain 'neared Italian rocks to greet friend on shore’

The captain of the stricken cruise liner, Costa Concordia, was accused on Sunday night of deliberately steering the ship "too close" to a rocky shore in order to send a greeting signal to someone on the Italian island of Giglio

Prosecutors believe Mr Schettino had been intending to perform the nautical equivalent of a fly-by past the island's main port when the accident happened. It had apparently become a long-standing practice for the Costa Concordia to sail close to the island in order to greet its inhabitants with a siren from the ship.

The tradition appears to have begun when the wife of a former senior officer lived on the island and he would take the ship close to Giglio to greet her. There were reports last night that the vessel's current officers had a friend ashore, from the Italian merchant navy, that they wanted to salute in a similar manner.

As the ship approached the port from the south, it sailed too close to the coastline and struck a rocky reef, known to locals as "Le Scole", a few hundred yards out. Islanders said they had never seen the ship try to pass so close before. Ships usually pass by up to five miles away.
A 160ft gash was torn in the £370 million ship's hull, causing it to take on large quantities of water in minutes and list violently. The 4,200 passengers and crew were told to abandon ship.

The only time I have ever been on a 'big' ship was on a HUGE ferry in Italy that crossed the south of Italy to Sicily.
They put the TRAIN cars that I was traveling on (starting out from Naples) on the ferry and we crossed the water over to the island of Sicily. To me it was really scarey but to everyone else it seemed to be just normal procedure. Everyone that was working there seemed like they knew exactly what they were doing and that took a lot of the fear away.

the driver made a wrong turn onto a dead-end road & had to turn around. One side of the bus was a steep hillside, the other side was a cliff (no guard rail) & straight down was the beautiful Mediterranean Sea.

I don't know how the driver did it, but he managed to turn that bus around, all the while each of us were screaming in terror!

You know what I remember more than that terror? My eyes fixated on a cop standing there nonchalantly watching the driver taking forever to (back & forth, back & forth) maneuver that bus. No care. No alarm. His & my eyes locked for a few seconds. That's what I remember most - that cop & others not acknowledging the danger or the screams of terror coming from inside.

There is no excuse for this.

I hope all of the cruise ships will perform thorough safety and evacuation drills with their crews. The passengers said the crew was useless in the evacuation process.

The fuel needs to be drained soon to avoid an ecological disaster. They are wondering if the ship will have to be cut up to be hauled away.

indicated on the GPS navigation display. The ship's autopilot should not have allowed the ship to cruise into known obstacles. The auto system should not have given the captain authority to cruise blindly into charted dangers without some other unexpected , overriding contingency.

The Captains's idea that he had the right to move the boat out of the authorized lanes and make a "flyby" of the island is beyond crazy. The company policy for a vessel of that size and cost should be that the boat doesn't move on inch unless several vital requirements are met.
Among those, a full time navigator, helmsman and someone with captain's authority on the bridge at all times. Any attempts be anyone to move the ship out of the authorized , planned path would be thwarted by the autopilot without expressed, coded overrides, that would need to be justified to the company.

surely one man cannot maneuver one of these mega ships, can he?

didn't any of the staff question their route?

Vessel Finder: http://www.vesselfinder.com/

You see the route the ship was on and then it veering way out of that line. Then it looks as though the ship turned around to come back close to shore. That may be the only smart thing the crew did - get the ship close to the island to make rescue a little easier.
