So from what I'm hearing, that's a trifecta -- Maryland and Maine also voted similarly to allow gay marriage or at least not to close the door on it.

The purpose, beyond raising the bar, was to get the haters out to vote. Thankfully, we did not place hate in our Constitution (what the amendment was about), but same sex marriage is still against the law. Taking both the state senate and house back into Democratic control does raise the possibility that some of the discrimination in our laws will get corrected, but same sex marriage is probably still a few years off.
