So I just had a random thought that maybe someone can answer

Tammy Duckworth was elected last night, she is disabled because of her service to the country, is the House floor handicapped accessible and does anyone know if she is the first handicapped person to be elected to congress?

No, she's not the first. For example, Max Cleland also became disabled serving his country. valerief Nov 2012 #1

... being rolled in on a gurney. The only details I can recall now are that he was one of the longest serving Members of Congress prior to Thurmond and that he hadn't missed a vote in nearly forty years. I think that turned out to be his last vote.

Oh, wait, it's the twenty-first century and shit and you don't have to take my "I vaguely recall" garbage anymore.

The guy was William H. Natcher, who served from 1954 to 1994.

I haven't seen her climb stairs, but I bet she does. But I understand your question. I'm pretty sure they've made some changes since it's the law to have handicapped access isn't it?
