Friend from high school (we both live in a blue region) posted status/comments on facebook after the election was called. Basically him and another guy complaining about how Obama voters are uneducated and want everything handed to them while sucking money out of working people. And then this comment: "...some of the people i know just sitting on welfare thinking the world owes them while they claim disability and sit on their asses gaming. But no, they deserve free healthcare and bums get free housing while i cant even apply for fucking financial aid."
He's a middle class USSR immigrant who graduated same high school class with me and is in junior college right now. I understand why Americans whose parents were from the USSR/other Communist countries usually vote Republican because they are uncomfortable with any state intervention or involvement in people's lives. (In fact my own parents are Chinese immigrants but they're politically moderate/independent.) But then I see my friend's comment as indicative of the 1%/Fox News/hate radio strategy to divide and conquer the middle class/working class/immigrants against each other. I just responded with a quick "either you need new friends or they're really disabled" one-liner. But I'd like to know a rational response to those in the middle class or working class who blame their hardships (and the economic state in general) on poorer people. I have encountered similar rhetoric from another friend re-posting a facebook status from a family member affected by Sandy and complaining about the uninsured and a Free Republic comment suggesting freeloaders have an easy life.

(6,335 posts)paid by tax payers averaging $30,000 a year. The truth is that they can only get welfare for 5 years and maybe only 1 or 2% of Americans are permanently on govt assistance for life. Even Steve Jobs was on govt assistance for a while when he was in his 20's.
Bush's depression has made more govt assistance necessary. The option is many beggars on every street corner like a poor 3rd world country.
And its the Republicans who have slowly made education more and more expensive. College was FREE in California before Reagan became governor.

(12,287 posts)usually do it out of fear or jealousy. Why are they so jealous of someone disabled? Would he be willing to become disabled to "get everything handed to him and suck the living out of working people"? He fails to see he would have to lose everything or have nothing to be in the same "cushy" state as these people he's referring to.

(47,992 posts)Blindly supporting a candidate every 2-4 years, and/or supporting the termination of systems that, while they may be abused by a fraction of the people, are authentically needed by others, is like using a sledge-hammer for cabinetry.
Your friend and those like him should honestly research his problem and the systems he blames and make specific recommendations to the persons who administer those systems and to the public at large regarding the use of their collective resources.

(11,252 posts)Whether you get any or not is dependent on income and how you file your taxes. Also, financial aid is not the only way to pay for school. Community colleges have lots of scholarships to apply for, as well.

(1,569 posts)"There are some people I know just sitting on financial aid thinking the world owes them while they claim financial aide and sit on their asses gaming..." Seriously, he complains about the lack of financial aide (a federal "handout" when bemoaning Romney's loss (who would have gutted federal education money?!?!?)
There certainly needs to be money both for those needs, but it is just plain stupid to think it is an either/or situation. We can do both things, easily if we choose. Harder is doing those things while maintaining 2 wars, pursuing a failed drug enforcement policy, and transitioning into a manufacturing era much less dependent on physical laborers. Funding both social nets and education are exactly the pillars of the Democrats.
